Who will have the better 2009?

Post by scottykick »

Going by the known list of games, it looks like for the first time since it has been out the PS3 may have more must play exclusive games then the 360, and even the Wii looks to have some solid third party games coming it's way...most notably Sega's very own Madworld.

360:

- Halo Wars (Strategy)
- Star Ocean 4 (JRPG)
- Halo 3: Recon (Ego-Shooter) (its standalone so i count it as a game)
- Ninja Blade (Action)
- Ninety-Nine Nights 2 (Action)
- Race Pro (Rennsimulation)
- Death Smiles (Shoot em up)

PS3:

- Final Fantasy XIII (JPRG) [Exclusive in Japan]
- DC Universe Online (MMMO)
- Ratchet And Clank Future 2
- Killzone 2 (Ego-Shooter)
- Heavy Rain
- L.A. Noire
- Quantom Theory (Third-Person-Shooter)
- Uncharted 2 (Action-Adventure)
- God Of War 3 (Action)
- Gran Turismo 5 (Rennsimulation)
- Demon Souls (Action)
- Infamous (Action)
- White Knight Chronicles (JRPG)
- Wardevil (Action-Adventure)
- Twisted Metal (Car Combat)
- M.A.G. (Online TPS)
- Yakuza 3 (Action)

Wii

- Madworld (Action)
- Punch Out (Sports)
- Sin & Punishment 2 (shooter)
- Dead Rising: Chop till you drop (Survival Horror) (360 Remake)

Hands down, my PS2, because it will see a lot more play by me than any of these.

Man, I really don't care about any of that, besides God of War 3 and a new Twisted Metal. Ironically, both are the same developer. I don't have much faith in Nintendo to make a new Punch Out on Wii that doesn't suck. Yakuza 3 will probably be good, but something tells me I'm never going to finish 2.

I think Sony will have the better lineup in 09 but M$ already has a great lineup, larger install base and a year head start. As much as I love my PS3 I think it may be too late for Sony to catch up to M$. The PS3 needs a price cut ASAP if its going to compete. If the average Joe walks into a Walmart and sees the $250.00 360 and the $400.00 PS3 his choice is already made. Not to mention the 360 has a awesome existing game lineup. The PS3 has masterpieces like LBP and MGS4 but they I think there selling below expectations sadly. Sony needs to do 3 things. 1-Bring back backwards compatiblity the PS2, its the most popular system in the world. 2-pull a game out of there ass thats so good it redefines the way games are played and brings videogames to a new level. Much like Nintendo did with SMB and Zelda. 3-Lower the price of the PS3 and Bluray movies, I don't own any Bluray movies there to expensive. Don't get me wrong, Sony is still doing good considering the shitty launch and loss of exclusives and other issues, but they need to get there shit together quick. Sony needs to justify the higher price tag period. For some reason The Wii continues to do great no matter what, its bullet proof. They could repackage GC games with tacked on waggle controls, sell them for full price. And they wouldn't have to release any new original games for the rest consoles life cycle and it would still sell millions. Oh wait....thats there next move. The Wii's line up looks pretty fucking great this year though. With games like Madworld, Muramasa, Sin and Punishment 2, Cursed mountain, Sadness, No more heroes 2, Punchout and others I'm forgetting the Wii is starting to win my heart....slowly.

I doubt all those games will actually be released in 2009 - we'll see. I think sales in 2009 will continue to be very similar to what they've been for all three consoles, with PS3 catching up part of the way to the 360 if and only if it gets a price cut.

Frankly, I don't care if the PS3 does go belly-up in the next year or two - it already has a huge library of great games including many exclusives that can keep anyone busy for quite a while. In fact, in two years it has had about 250 disc based games released and another 60+ PSN games. Even if it was discontinued at the end of next year, it would still end up with a library of well over 300 games. Plus, it remains one of the better BD players - although it will be interesting to see if the sub $150 BD deals start cutting into PS3 sales....

That said, I hope it continues to grow sales numbers next year just like it did this year - it would be good if this does indeed mirror the 10 year lifespan the PS2 has had.

Sony should have a better year, if better is relative to the previous year. The Xbox 360 is topping out their market, the Wii is going to have some deceleration (though likely still be #1 in sales next year), and the worldwide economy is in recession.

That leaves Sony, who has a chance of rising prosperity if they cut costs and cut the price of the PS3. The HD market will be hit hard, but anyone who wants a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none media player will know where to go.

I'm having a similar feeling towards the PSP. I hear some people worried about its future going into 2009, but it already has a ton of great games. Plus, plenty of great stuff on homebrew and imports.

That's not to say that I wouldn't like to see Sony become more successful however. I mean, in terms of hardware, the PS3 and the PSP are the best on the market, and much of their potential has been wasted by bone-headed decisions from Sony. And given that neither one of the big three companies have given us anything truly next-gen, I wouldn't mind seeing Sony step up. They do have the most powerful system after all.

Two reasons why I think it would be nice for Sony to succeed in the coming years is that:
1.The Wii SEEMS to be becoming less and less of a real gamers' machine every day.
2.I've grown tired of the 360's overemphasis on certain things like first person shooters, multi-player gaming, etc. Neither current gen console really can match the old PS2 for sheer variety.

It really wouldn't be the end of the world for me is Sony continued to go downhill in '09, but I hope that's not the case. The PS3 has some good stuff coming and I think Sony is finally starting to focus on getting exclusive content for multi-console releases. There was a recent release that will supposedly get exclusive PS3 content, but I don't remember which game it is. Sony is also telling us there will be surprises in '09 for PSP owners and that they are winning back third party publishers, but that could all be BS for all we know.

Your lack of mention of Muramasa: The Demon Blade for the Wii makes me sad.

Same here, my focus at the moment lies on the dozen PS2 games that I want to get to know better. I'm also waiting for Persona 4.

On the other hand, after I played Fahrenheit with great enthusiasm, its spiritual sequel Heavy Rain might finally lure me into the PS3 camp and for the first time into the curious world of the current generation.
