This past weekend the wife was busy decorating the house for Christmas so I was ahead of the game to just stay out of her way. I still had to pitch in occassionally when she needed a "manly" task completed but for the most part I played vids from 10 in the morning until about 5pm on Sunday. I had a hard time deciding what game to play. I have tons of games I've collected but never really played and many more that I've gotten stuck on. I always hesitate to play a game I'm stuck on because I don't want to waste my precious (and hard to find lately) gaming time repeatedly doing a section that I can't get past.
I've set aside Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for nearly a year for that very reason. I decided I simply wanted to move on in the game. I dove in and found I simpy couldn't remember where I left off! I spent about an hour reinvestigating areas I had already cleared before I figured out all I had left was a b*tch of a boss fight (which, I recalled, is why I set the game aside in the first place). Well, as is typical, I discovered a previously unused tactic to fairly easily defeat the boss after about a dozen attempts and went on my merry way. I made some decent progress in the game and it felt good to spend such an amount of time gaming.
Does anyone else set aside games for so long that you forget where you were?

Re: FINALLY! Some time for gaming
That happens to me all the time, although nowadays I always make an effort not to leave a game unfinished, because I know how hard it'll be to come back to it. Worse than not remembering where I left is forgetting the story. I had to restart countless games from the beginning because I just couldn't remember what was going on, and with story-heavy games half the fun is following the plot.

Yep, I've got close to 40 unfinished games, some I haven't touched in many years. Picking them up, I wouldn't have the slightest about where I was or what to do next. That's why I try to stick to a couple games at a time so I can finish them before moving on. Harder than it sounds to do though.
Re: FINALLY! Some time for gaming
Happened to me so many times I don't play RPGs that much any more unless I KNOW (and I mean, like have a good few weeks to dedicate to it) I'm going to be able to finish it.

Somthing like that happened to me this evening; I turned on my PSP for the first time in ages to play some Super Castlevania IV on the SNES emulator and when I checked under the save-states I found a save right before Dracula, so I loaded it up, got the secret power-up's and kicked Dracula's ass before starting the game over again
It happens to me alot in RPGs, but I don't really bother loading up an old save as I never remmember what the hell I was doing.

Wow, 40 is a bit much. I've been pretty good about finishing games recently. Finished Age of Mythology and Quake 4 in one weekend not too long ago. And Crimson Skies just before that. But yeah, I have some catching up to do as well. I kinda let Phantasy Star 3 languish, need to get to that one soon before I forget everything. I got stuck in Beyond Good and Evil, not sure if I'm going to bother finishing that one. It's awfully 'meh', IMO. I'm still making progress in Xenogears too, couple of hours at a time.
I just started playing Wasteland on my iigs, so that's taking most of my time for now. Looking forward to the christmas break. I've got 12/24-1/5 off, so I'll definitely finish up some of these. Not starting anything new until I do.

Re: FINALLY! Some time for gaming
yeah, the biggest problem for me is that rpgs are my favorite genre, and they take the most time to play, so when i just want some play time with no dedication, i cant play the games i want to most
Re: FINALLY! Some time for gaming
I'm on xmas break from college so I'm doing some serious gaming also. I've been playing nothing but arcade style games so it'll be nice to play through some longer stuff like Gears of war 2 among others
Re: FINALLY! Some time for gaming
i have a similar problem but not with RPGs or adventure games, its skate! ive had skate for at least 6 months and have not gotten past the god damn Mega Ramp challenges!!! every time i get inspired to play it, i do and fail horribly! get frustrated and put it back on my shelf for a month.
