I've always bought Disgaea games, but never stick with them that long. As other's have said the options in these games are super overwhelming, often you can go into weapons and fight and level them up. I just don't have time for that crap.

Yeah I played 1 & 2 on PS2 and called it a day.

Way too long, way too grindy, way too involved.

The stories aren't really related. Disgaea 1 is the most beloved, at least according to the Japanese. Not sure what is most popular here. From the bits I've played of Disgaea 1, Disgaea 3, and Disgaea 4 I easily thought Disgaea 4 had the best cast. Gameplay wise there definitely have been some changes throughout the series but seemingly not a HUGE amount.

Disgaea games are too long? I cleared the main story in D3 in about 18-20 hours, I believe? Didn't bother with extra stuff because I don't love the gameplay THAT much. And didn't like the main character that much either.

Yeah I felt the same way with Disgaea 3, the gameplay just wasn't as captivating as the first few. Which is why i'm so happy that D2 uses the weapon mastery system from the first two games!

Yeah, I don't see how people can stick with these games. I got my fill after the first two. They just keep recycling everything in each game, and the time sink required is ridiculous. They make these games for people with no life. Now that I've played more accessible and less grindy strategy rpgs like Jeanne D'Arc, Fire Emblem Awakening, and Valkyrie Chronicles, Disgaea just feels dated and irrelevant.

The grindy nature of a lot of Japanese games becomes more and more of a turn off to me the older I get and the more valuable my time becomes (looking at you Dragon's Crown)

i played 1 and 2 on the psp. I really did enjoy them. I'm okay with grinding. Although they kinda do make you OCD trying to level up everything and everyone.

The first ps2 version of disgaea has exclusive music from a band called Tsunami Bomb. And due to licensing (greed), is no longer available on later copies.

And grind away I did! 350 hours  on part one and about 200 on disgaea 2.

@Noiseredux, The DS version sucks! I really tried to like it, but I cant go back once you played the superior psp one. On the ds everything is a lot more fuzzy and the other screen which shows your position on the map is useless. Zooming in and out is a pain too on the DS. I'm glad I emulated it on a R4 to try it out, I would have returned it to GameStop if I bought it physically.

Yeah, Disgaea 2 is more of the same. But if you liked 1, you'll enjoy this one. I had started playing it on ps2 but seeing how many hours i put into part 1, i bit the bullet and purchased it for the PSP.

I had started 3 on the ps3 but, I expected it to be more like its predecessors, but its not quite the same. They tried something a little different this time around, and it doesnt quite click with me. didnt play it too long.

Disgaea 4 takes too damn long to install! The patch/update is over a gigabyte and it took close to an hour to download. But this game seems more similar to the first two. I've been playing it for a few weeks now. But i'm debating whether to stop playing this and jump straight to disgaea D2. I'm a fan of the characters of the first series.

yeah, i'll be grinding. A lot.

After playing this game for a couple weeks, I gotta say it might be my favourite Disgaea yet (granted I didn't play much of 4). The plot's great and the weapon mastery system is the best system in my opinion. And the grinding is sooo much better this time around.
The trophies aren't that bad too, so it's definitely 100%-able (but there are some killer ones).

I've been playing this too.

once again i'm willingly stuck in the item world leveling up my characters and getting free goodies!

i've got 65 hours on it so far!

I'm at the part where Laharl is a girl!

Well, I got to go back to grinding!

I had fun playing through the first title on the PSP. Combat is a blast, and Prinnies are super cool. The grinding began to feel like a chore though, so I put it down and only pick it up sparingly (if that). I also own the game on PS2, D2 on PSP, and D4 for PS3. I used to be such a game hoarder. blegh. They're all on my 'to play' list definitely however.
