Conolizing a MVS/ RGB to TV converter?

Post by TheMadMan »

So I finally got around to pulling out a MVS unit from one of my Neo Geo cabs that is going to be re purposed. I want to consolize it and I've been reading up on how to do it. I have a PC Power Supply, I have a JAMMA Harness, I have the System with a few games to test out. But I don't know where to start on the whole RGB to NTSC converter. I've looked at a lot of sites and they all point to a ton of old websites that I really don't think are in business. I'd prefer to use Amazon, (Or eBay if I REALLY have to) but I don't have the time to mess around with building my own. I don't know if a commercial one from like monoprice.com or amazon is available, or if it is even made, but I'd rather go with that. If anyone has any links to one I can buy that isn't crazy expensive, that would help out a lot.

Also, I'd like it to output to either component or if at all possible HDMI.

Gonbez GBS-8220 paired with a cheap Monprice VGA-HDMI?

I've never bought from that site, but I do have experience with that scaler. It works well, tho it needs an Arcadeforge SLG to add scanlines to make it's output beautiful.
I used the GBS with an Arcadeforge Sync-Strike and SLG-3000 with mostly great success on all my SCART capable devices. The set of them together was cheaper than other methods to force scanlines in even 480i input ( the GBS-8220 has bad deinterlacing), but the SLG can be set to omit the interlace field. On 240P input it worked awesome unless there were mode-changes (as PS1 games like to do for start-menus).

Another route is a RGB to YUV transcoder. Cypress & Kramer make them. I have the CYP-2100 and some users here, myself included have had problems with finding the right cables to interface our consoles to it, tho I was ultimately succefull in interfacing it to everything. I know nothing about the FC-14.

some links:

Not cheap, but ultimately easier and more reliable - Get an XRGB and a cable to interface your board to it. I've completely replaced all my other scalers and transcoders with Micomsoft products because they work more consistently.

Your single arcade PCB should not require as much, so given some research, your solution will be much cheaper than an XRGB unit.

Thank you! I went with the GBS and I'll grab the Arcadeforge later, once I make sure everything is up and running properly.

It looks like I have might mixed up some terminology and now I'm kinda stuck. What I originally wanted to do was to take my MVS and "Consolize" it. Having a nice 1 system solution, with just the Board with a game plugged in, and 1 or 2 controllers and a AV and power cable. Something along the lines like this Image

Now where I got mixed up was I thought I needed a Jamma harness, a PC powersupply/ Switching Arcade Power Supply, and a Video Encoder. So I bought all the parts, and its cost me roughly $80 and I still have no idea what to do. So I started doing some more research and it looks like I bought all the parts to make a Supergun instead, and from what I understand if I have a SuperGun I can hook up the Jamma harnessconnector to my MVS and then its all powered and controlled from the SuperGun.

Personally I'd rather just have it consolized but all the tutorials have either missing information since they were all older sites and the links no longer work or they have conflicting information.

Now I found this Tutorial http://www.jamma-nation-x.com/jammax/files/cmvsmv2f.pdf
Is this a fully done and correct guide to Consolize my MVS or is there a newer/better way to do this?

Have not actually consolized an MVS myself, but I'm reasonably certain everything you need to make a supergun is still useable to consolize (except for the Jamma harness, that shouldn't be required as you can just solder directly to the jamma edge, though I've heard about people using a harness when they don't want to solder directly to the board)...

But regardless of all that, James at JNX is an A+ source of info, I would definitely believe anything from his site.

To just function the 2-slot MVS needs very little.
Mainly jamma connector, power input / button, insert coin button, and RGB socket.

It already has joystick and audio ports. Video encoding could be external if desired (such as a SCART converter).
