Sadly, that's a pretty accurate representation of the game.

Gotta love Sage's Creation too...

Violent By Design wrote:I had a somewhat similar experience with Galaxy about half way toward beating it, I started playing it just to beat it, and didn't really have that much fun. I'm surprised you collected that many stars, I did the bare minimum to beat the game and moved on with no intent of continuing at all. The actual stage designs from a platforming/challenging point of view, are not very engaging. The camera angles are kinda messed up too, and there are a lot of times when you're pressing one direction and Mario is going the opposite because of how small a lot of the platforms were. The actual controls with Mario are good, but the levels he's in are boring if you get past the aesthetics.
Sometimes I'm surprised by what I'm willing to subject myself to, as well. I can think of a couple level designs, or elements of a level, that I found interesting, but otherwise, I agree with pretty much all of that.

I was giving it some thought, and to me, it feels like the idea of a 3D platformer, as laid down by Mario 64, is fundamentally flawed. There's almost always issues with perspective and camera—I've heard that 3D Land overcomes this somewhat with the 3D functionality, but I'm still skeptical. A lot of other games try to avert this crisis with a bit more leniency in the platforming and a wider range of attacks. Mario straight doesn't care about your first-world problems, though. It's you, a Goomba, and Mario's feat, and that's all there will ever be. For all the hate, FLUDD made Mario much more versatile, and as a result, I thought it was a much more fun and interesting game to play. The camera was still janky, but I appreciated the design much more. The other thing is, nothing will ever jump as well as a 2D sprite, so maybe trying to get something akin to pixel perfect platforming in a 3D environment isn't the way to go.

That said, I'll probably give Galaxy 2 a go at some point. I keep getting mixed messages about it, but you seem to have had the nearest experience to mine with the first game, so I'm willing to place more faith in your assessment of the sequel.

It overcomes it with a fixed-perspective camera not with the 3D functionality.

The fixed camera was incredible. Sonic in that style would be beyond perfect.

3D World was definitely a nice break from 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, etc. It's straight to the point awesomeness. You could almost compare it to the original Crash more than anything or something.

Ooh, that's not good to here. I find that the fixed camera in 3D World creates a lot of problems with relative perception of depth and perspective, for me. Especially in cases where the target is more into the screen on a single plane. I think it's actually worse, in that sense, than the 64 style 3D Mario games.

So earlier tonight, I finally beat this game, after countless times of playing and getting close and dying, hundreds of times:

I should get a nobel prize for this.
