Word is this can't happen because Capcom doesn't have the old assets along with / or something to do with the first two games having mostly pre-rendered backgrounds so aspect ratio and resolution would be a big problem there.
Yeah, I've heard that too. It would basically require the first two to be rebuilt from the ground up. Knowing Capcom, that ain't gonna happen (why hello, Miss Decapre). No harm in wishing, though.

Yeah unfortunately Capcom hates money.

Huge sucker here. If I liked the original, the HD remake must be mine.

I really enjoy the ones that don't feel like they're lame cash-ins and actually go through some sort of QA process (Hello Silent Hill collection.....)

Treatments akin to Tomb Raider definitive edition need to happen more often.

Usually they're just called "the PC version".

In general, I like HD remakes. I've swapped out most of the relevant PS2 games for HD collections on 360 or PS3.

Depends on the game for me. I have argued against a FF7 remake for various reasons but I would buy, say, Shenmue HD in an instant just for a smoother experience. FF9 HD might be cool though.

I actually wrote a post entitled "Arguments For and Against a Remake of Final Fantasy IX" that was a lot of fun to write. Overall, I think I'm for it :3

Having seen both, the definitive edition on the PS4/XB1 actually are superior to the original PC version.

I haven't seen them in person, though I do know there was some debate about it - non-flattering PC shots in Kotaku's comparison for example.

Either way, in this particular case, it's a deliberate move. SE is going for a double-dip, and not just releasing an update to the PC version that'd be perfectly capable of supporting the changes they made.
Usually though, it's the other way around. Some games get official HD texture packs post-release. Others get modded. Some, like Skyrim, get both. When the PC release comes along later, it's also not unheard of for gameplay tweaks to be made, as in the case of Jade Empire or Mass Effect (if not entire fan patches that reenable unreleased content as there are for Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines or KoTOR 2).

I haven't seen the PS4 version, but I would still have to agree with you. Only because I believe then enhanced the lighting engine and most textures, but I could be wrong.
