Yeah, the reader reviews are really insightful. Here's one for Minecraft by Nicole Wilson.
It is just a game were you make buildings and everything is cubes. Everyone has it I don't like all that if we don't some people will be sad.
Here's one for Watch Dogs, which is impressive since it isn't out yet.
This game has amazing open world plus aflicticlec graphics and a generative story line buy buy buy o yeah and the online is a new engine to the xbox so it is amazing pluss open world in it as well
Much rather have this over professional writers who've been in and about the industry for years.

It's easy to filter out the nonsense user reviews by reading them. They throw off the numerical score, but the actual text always gives them away. The numerical scores on Amazon are always skewed towards 5/5, anyhow.

Also, I would never refer to video game critics as "stuffy" or "pretentious". IGN is hardly Cahiers du Cinema or The New York Times Review of Books.

Tell me about it. Those people who "go to school" and "learn how to make quantifiable criticisms both rationally and creatively". What's up their butts? If I want some guy with an honest opinion I'll go to Yahoo Answers, thank you very much.

I can't see it either.

Maybe because I used AdBlock?

Can't we all agree that the vast majority of all reviews SUCK and are either completely uninformed binge ranting or pretentious bias-filled self indulgence?
It doesn't matter if it's a professional writing it or not anyways... When you find a good review (boy, what a rarity that is) or one that resonates with your line of thinking on the subject matter, you just appreciate it for what it is and leave it, regardless of if a "professional" wrote it or not!

I've never really understood the fact that some people use reviews as a basis for a purchase/reason to pick up a game. But that is just because I require more than some words on a page or screen to compel me to try something... a lot more.

prfsnl_gmr's "to do" list for April 2, 2014
1. Buy a copy of Dead Space 3
2. Drop off dry cleaning
3. Work out
4. Make a member of the Racketboy forums sad
6. Spend time with children

Only three more to go!
