Kinda want to finish it and see about Suikoden II though... I've been enjoying this game quite a bit.

Clive is completely random. He's not fun at all to recruit if you don't find him normally in the course of a playthrough.

Crowley isn't really all that difficult to get, he's just past a hidden passage, like a lot of treasure chests in the game.
The only real benefit you would get out of getting those characters now would be seeing some information about them in the ending/credits, and in the case of Clive and Max, getting them at higher levels than normal once recruited in Suikoden II if you were to import the save data.

I played a bit more on Sunday. Defeated the Zombie Dragon, which has always been a pain for me.

Yeah, it took me five times of going into and out of Rikon to get him. :x
So, it was the four I mentioned above and I went and got them all.

Beat it last night.
Barbarosa was pretty difficult I thought, I almost ran out of healing pots before taking him down. His "I did it for love" speech was pretty weak.
Loved it. Really enjoyed the collection aspects of the army, game wasn't terribly challenging, but it was a good length.

Yeah ... seems like that isn't available on PSN, so not sure where I'd play it at the moment. I want to, but I don't want to shell out for the discs.

Finished the Saturn version. Overall, I was very dissatisfied with the port. The extra content really doesn't make up for the buggy, sloppy mess that is the presentation. I was able to generally forgive a lot of the graphical changes, but for some reason the one that set me off was:
In climbing Neclord's castle, there was no progression of daylight. It was just blue skies all the way up!
I was almost shaking with rage by the time I reached the top.

It's novel to have the original Suikoden on the Saturn, I just wish it had been more competently ported. (They must have been working on the game during the cold winter months in Sapporo. As a result, they were shivering too much to code everything properly. At least, that's what I hope happened.) As it is, it's probably not really worth playing over the PS1 version. So very sad.

Otherwise, I still love Suikoden. Sure, II and III are probably substantially better games, but the first one is very near and dear to me. I'll always put it with an asterisk below II and III.
