So I'm not sure why I never thought to look up record shops on Yellow Pages. I did, and I found 6 that were pretty close. The closest being about 10 minutes from my house, the furthest being about 30 minutes.

If any one remembers, I posted that I found a really cool shop called Record Reserve in East Northport and took a trip there. That guy had ALL vinyl, and a very nice selection. But it's like a 45 minute trip for me, so I wanted to find something closer. Long story short, I went "vinyling" with my friend today.

Record Stop
45 Ramsey Rd
Shirley, NY 11779
631-504-6311

I figure since there's a few of us that live around here I'd post the address for any one that's interested. It's recommended. The guy had a LOT of stuff in there, and it's not all vinyl. He had a TON of CDs, a decent amount of DVDs and a good amount of bootleg stuff. I mainly focused on looking at the vinyls though. He had a good selection of new stuff (new pressings), and of course a large selection of used stuff. It was pretty well organized, but he also had something like 100 or 200 vinyls that came in and have yet to be sorted.

Here's what I got...

Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic, I didn't realize how shitty it came out!

Boston Third Stage
Eagles One of these Nights
Eagles In the Long Run
Meat Loaf Bat out of Hell
The Doors Absolutely Live (not pictured)
Grand Total: $8.69

Yeah, that's right, $8.69 for $5 vinyls. I will most definitely be going back!

As I posted the other day, I wanted to get the Eagles albums on vinyl even though I plan on getting the CD box set from Amazon because I enjoy album art. These are two great examples. The Long Run is a gatefold. One of these Nights isn't, but it's embossed which is pretty cool. I really wanted the debut album in particular, like I said earlier, but I still got some other shops to check out and this one to go back to from time to time.

Also, I was standing in this music shop, looking at Eagle albums, and thinking of Luke.

I actually got Bat out of Hell because the artwork looked so awesome. I've only ever seen that on cassette, and it just looked fantastic that large. That, and, I was actually just thinking a few weeks back that I'd like to hear more Meat Loaf other than the 2 songs you hear on the radio.

My mom was telling me a while back that she had The Doors Absolutely Live back when, lent it out to a friend and never got it back. She's a fan of the Doors. She told me about this live album and how Jim Morrison reads some poetry on it, so I've been keeping an eye out for it. So that was a total score.

I went to this other place called Patricio Records in Patchogue, and it was a total waste of time. There were a few shelves of CDs, but they looked like CDs you'd find at the counter at a CVS or similar. The rest of the store looked like a dollar store. We actually walked past it and couldn't find it at first because there was all this weird shit in the front window. Not what you'd expect a place called "Patricio's Records" to look like. But on the bright side, we did find this little shop called "Mother's Movies" which was a neat little shop.

Anyway, I've got three other places to check out on my list, so I'll report back on them. One of the three is actually another place called Record Stop, so I'm assuming it's the same owner but second location. What's cool is that the first Record Shop can be on my way to the second, so I can hit up both in one run.

Good haul man.

Thanks for the reminder that I need some DOORS lps. First on my list would be LA WOMAN. How is Absolutely Live?

When I was looking through the D's in the used section, there were actually a LOT of Doors. I didn't listen to Absolutely Live, but here's the track listing on the back...

Side A (19:17)
1. Who Do You Love
2. Medley:
Alabama Song
Backdoor Man
Love Hides
Five to One

Side B (18:33)
1. Build Me a Women
2. When the Music's Over

Side C (18:00)
1. Close to You
2. Universal Mind
3. Break On Thru, #2

Side D (21:52)
1. The Celebration of the Lizard
2. Soul Kitchen

Yeah, it's a double album and gatefold jacket. Some liner notes say, "This album was compiled from live performances recorded in cities throughout the United States between August 1969 and June 1970."

It looks pretty cool. Like I said, I've never heard it, but my mom loves it. If you find it for not a lot I would suggest picking it up.

edit: Oh, I almost forgot.
When we were walking around Patchogue, we were walking around to this black man for a few blocks. Now, I'm not racial profiling. In fact, I should have done some racial profiling. He was walking with a female and about 3 small children. They seemed like a family. At one point, the man walks over to us saying something that sounded like a question. I had to say "what" a few times then finally "I can't hear you, man." Turns out, he was intentionally trying to keep his voice down because he was asking about drugs. Maybe "drugs" is a little harsh, it was just pot. But he's like, "Got bud?" And I'm like, "Ohhhh. No, sorry." And he's like, "Nah, I have it."
And One of these Nights is one of my new favorite album covers.

Not that the art is so impressive itself, but the whole eagle and skull thing is embossed and it's actually pretty cool.

another edit: So I was just reading, all the cool looking Meat Loaf cover arts were designed by comic book and/or horror and/or sci-fi/fantasy illustrators. No wonder they look so cool!

Nice lot, Zig! I should go check that place out even though it's quite a hike.

I've been to the record reserve and talked to the owner. He started me off on some great country and bluegrass records. He also sells pretty decent equipment second hand.

In Nassau there are a few decent shops.
Nostalgia Records on Park ave. in Massapequa (my personal fav)
High Fidelity Records on Merrick Rd in Amityville
Mr Cheapos in Mineola

Well there's another Record Stop on Vets, right by MacArthur. I haven't been to that one, but I'm guessing it's more or less the same deal. I plan on going soon though, so I'll let you know if it's worth the trip. MacArthur is a lot closer to you than Shirley.

Record Reserve was awesome, and the owner seemed really nice. I wish it wasn't so far, I'd love to go there often. The area was pretty cool, too. Did you notice the other shops around on that road? There were 2 different instrument shops and a luthier shop.

My friend told me about those shops last time he went. I was thinking of stopping by next week to check them out while doing some record shopping. I like to go there before heading off to the beach!

I only stopped in the one instrument shop. It was typical. They carried high school band instruments and had a decent selection of sheet music. The guitar, bass and drum selections were pretty slim though. They only carried a few brands, and it was mostly low end stuff. I can understand not being able to carry many brands, or bigger name brands, and having a lack of space in a store, but I at least like to see a decent selection of used gear.

The other instrument shop is really close to Record Reserve, it's like a few stores down. When I was there though, it was closed. I think there was an "out to lunch" note on the door. We didn't have time, so I ended up not going into the luthier shop, which was a little further down the street (but not too far - still walking distance from Record Reserve).

I picked up a vinyl only set I have wanted for a while last night on ebay. Dr. Demento Greatest Novelty Records of All Time Collection.

Six albums of screwball comedy music broken up by decades - 40s-80s and a Christmas album. I have his 20th Anniversary cds, my older brother gave it to me about a decade ago, he got it in 1991, and I am surprised that both discs still work considering how much they have been played. It was between this on a set of Tom Lehrer albums, and I went with the one that is harder to find - that and I have all of Lehrer's albums on cd already.
