Am I The Only Sucker For An HD Remake?

Post by Frag Mortuus »

I genuinely get excited about HD remakes, or whatever you want to call them. I have several of them like Sly Cooper HD Collection, DMC HD, Ratchet and Clank, ICO, FFX/X2, and want others. I just got excited when I read that Deep Silver is remastering both Metro games and re-releasing them on PS4. Yeah, the second game is less than a year old, but I never got to play it, so this makes me happy.

Surely I'm not the only one that gets excited over these (as long as they are terrible, I'm looking at you Silent Hill). Who else likes them?

I would love to get lots of remakes of old, unpolished games but none of the games I like gets one! I would gadly pay for a remake of Thief II or a playested version of Gradius III but it's just not going to happen :(

Depends on the game, and the quality of remake.

I tend to like the idea of them :)
I don't own any (don't have a PS3 or 360) but I kind of like how it would make it easier to try out a game series that I haven't played before (if it's a bundle of games, like most of them seem to be). I also like the idea of Wind Waker HD because the original is a bit on the pricey side >< (not that I have a WiiU either...)

Not everything really needs to be HD-remade though... I kind of the thought that Okami HD was a bit unnecessary, but that might just be me :/

This. I see four types of HD Remakes.

The 'Highest Quality', like Halo: Anniversary Edition when games are build from the ground up with tweaks to the gameplay mechanics to fix the problems people had it with it, while bringing in engine changes from later versions, high res textures, etc. Monkey Island and Halo both had the ability to roll back to the original version on the fly, I little things like this in remakes.

The 'Quality' ones like Wind Waker HD, where they change menus, tweak textures, add / tweak elements of gameplay that were broken or could be more user friendly. It is still a port, but done the best way it can be done.

The 'Good' ones, like Jak and Daxter Trilogy, resolution is upped and all that jazz but they have made small tweaks to settings to fix some complaints with the original release (like not making inverted controls the only options), but for the most part it is a 1:1 remake.

The 'Bad' are games like Splinter Cell Trilogy HD, where they just up the resolution and be on their way. Often with stuff actually appearing broken in game due to the resolution being up, slow downs, longer than the original loading times, etc.

These 'remasterings' generally just borrow higher res textures from the pc versions and up the lighting, physics to be on par with the PC version that came out a few years earlier. Good way to cash in on your old properties,, but not really anything new.

Generally, if I like a particular series I already own the original games and I have enough space issues without buying multiple variations of the same game. I do have the ICO/SotC collection, but I think that's because I was able to find it for cheaper than a standalone ICO.

They're great for space saving. I managed to reduce a good chunk of my PS2 collection because of the HD collections.

How can the Metro games be re-mastered, like the PS4 or Xboner wouldnt play them at Medium i bet, you need a pretty killer PC to play them at Max the way it is.

Im not going to buy a PS4 or Xboner for remakes, i want something new and original.

I have started looking at the HD remakes as the definitive versions (if gameplay is at least equal to the original), because games like Wind Waker HD, Halo Anniversary, ICO Collection, FFX HD and others of that quality add content or enhance existing content, while doing a great job of raising the graphics quality. Meanwhile you have the ports like Silent Hill and the original RE4 HD (PSN and XBL version) which are crap. Ridden with bugs and poor graphics quality that make them inferior to the originals.

But, when the version is superior I will sell off my original game (unless it's rare or just uncommon).
