It was a .cue. I seem to be having a more pressing issue at the moment though. I've got two Dreamcasts(one for me, one for my girlfriend), and only one of them is playing the burned games. The other doesn't recognize that a disc is present. I know the spindle is ok, because the machine is spinning the disc. So now I'm looking into that boot disc.

Ok, and the saga continues.

So I made the Utopia boot disc, right? The Dreamcast that plays burned games doesn't recognize it, and plays it like it was an audio CD.

The Dreamcast that doesn't recognize burned games plays it though...but not when plugged into the DC VGA box. When it's plugged into the VGA box, it tells me the Utopia disc doesn't recognize that AV cable, and I have to try a different one. But when its hooked up using RCA cables, it runs the Utopia disc just fine.

But even when I swap the Utopia disc when it tells me, it still won't play the burned games. It doesn't even recognize the new disc is there. Anybody ever hear of something like this?

With imports I have trouble booting with utopia, when i try to play them with a VGA box. Gameshark CDX helped me out with that.

Hmm...well, on the upside at least I know it works. That was my initial fear. I may just have to buy legit copies of DC games, which doesn't really bother me too much.

I would look a little deeper into this before abandoning it. Without a working boot disc you'll have to go through much more trouble to play imports, homebrew, and those few unreleased Dreamcast games running around (Half-Life, Propeller Arena, ect). As far as games that have gotten official releases, I would just buy them. I hate the idea of experiencing a lesser version of a game, which is what you get with many of these. Plus, most of them are cheaper than lunch. A few hours of hunger are well worth Chu Chu Rocket, in my opinion.

Also, what is the manufacture date on each Dreamcast?

id say just get cdi always. thats what i do to save the hasel. if you want a good site then i would recomend this site

most of their games are cdi. cdi is good too cause you can even play foreign games with it. im not sure if any of you mentioned this or knew about this. just wanted to help. but you should probably read more into how to burn other formats for the sake of gaining the knowledge but its your call.

I've found for .bin .cue files that bin2boot works very reliably. It is a very small and useful tool set available online for free. Also I was never a big fan of .cdi burning applications so I use cdi2nero and then burn the nero images with an older version (pre v8) of nero and have very few problems. If you can get on Underground-gamer there are many torrents of Dreamcast games and I haven't downloaded a corrupt one yet.

Here are some good places to get utilities.

On the other hand many people prefer .cdi format and the programs that use it. They just never were all that reliable for me. So these are some other options to consider if you are still having problems.

I didn't read the entire thread so I don't know if it has been mentioned already, but the Dreamcast is also picky about media if you find a brand that works well stick with it.

Like other people have said, just go for .cdi image files. They are the easist to work with.

I use a demo version of Disc Juggler and never have any problems.

Ok, manufacture dates:

One that plays burned games, April 2000.

One that won't play burned games, December 1999.

Also, next to NTSC is the number 1 on both. I read somewhere that that could have to do with it, but they're both the same number.

And beyond my foray with Guilty Gear, I've been sticking only to the .cdi format, at least for the time being. I now have burned copies of Street Fighter III Third Strike, Jet Grind Radio, and Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves. But none of them work in the other Dreamcast. Also, though it spins the disc and moves the laser when I put a burned game in, it doesn't sound like it's really attempting to read the disc. Would calibrating the laser help with that, or does the possible damage I could do outweigh the benefits?
