The State of Racketboy?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I haven't noticed anything - posts and activity seem pretty steady.

There is a concerted effort to keep the site fun, current AND retro, mostly clean, and not filled with diversionary (tangential) pissing contests. The community as a whole has a mostly polite, but firm, aversion to "+1" and "XD" posts. If you don't have something meaningful to say - then the majority aren't very interested. It is that mentality that separates the site from Twitter and Facebook, or the oft mentioned gamefaqs. It is those things that sometimes limits posts - I hope we don't think that's a bad thing. Quality > Quantity.

There are MUCH slower gaming forums, dozens of them, that are still "active" and have core communities.

I'd argue we have closer to 50 quite active posters and another 100-200 regulars who post weekly. Then another much larger group whom post monthly, or in bunches, or whom show up for specific things.

I haven't been posting as much or really reading the forums much since about midway through this month. I've been busy! I'm going to be moving into a new apartment soon, I have a bunch of other projects I'm working on, and truth be told, I tend to cycle through my interests in media, and I've gotten burned out on SNES games for the time being. I'm playing a bit more on the PC from my GOG collection, but I'm also watching movies and just focusing on other things. I have had a lot of ideas for projects that I put on the backburner, but it has become more apparent that they're just languishing there because of my inaction, so I'm trying to get through a few of them.

I think it's been pretty active, and people are ebbing and flowing in their attendance to the site. Career moves, family happenings, opportunities to be outside soon arriving, there's enough to capture our attention.

This is one of the only gaming forums that I frequent and I don't readily discuss gaming too much via social media (what's wrong with me?). I think the site is great, I'll peruse a few threads a day and chime in if there's something I feel I can contribute to.

And BMF is right, we're doing things together. I think we might be boxed in to our respective sub-forums or console-specific / genre-specific threads, but I think that's okay in its own right.

I've been a member since 2009 but have taken extended breaks from the site. But, those usually coincide with my gaming habits. However, I always come back to this site because the quality of the community. I have been to forums that will pretty much ignore you if you aren't part of their clique and new members need not ask a question because you won't get an answer. This community is always helpful and informative, with a little joking for good measure. But, I have never felt, nor have I ever read posts by regulars that make people feel unwelcome. I have been a follower of Destructoid since shortly after it's inception, I used to blog there a good bit and actually won a contest they held to win a free copy of Dragon Age Origin. But, as they continue to grow I hate the community more and more. Every statement creates a flame war and God forbid you disagree with an editor or their popular opinion. But, RB will allow you to express your opinion unpopular opinion with little more than a little ribbing or feather ruffling. I hope this site stays for a long time to come, this is literally the only site that I care to be an active part of.

I for one am in the "Checking this site way too frequently" for one very good reason -- it's one of the only forums I'm able to get to (interestingly enough, only by googling for it and following that link) from work. Here and a truly dead forum that has about 20 posters, period, and rarely more than 5 online at once. Unfortunately, I don't have all that much to contribute so I end up spending way too much money on the BST forum

But I still love having you guys around.
Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!
Cheat sheet of my collection, always looking to increase it. 405/677 licensed games, 46/"95" unlicensed
Chronically out of date BST thread

I'd felt as if it had gotten a little quieter around here too, but a part of that is simply my noticing the relative absence of certain posters (e.g. AppleQueso, whom I was thrilled to see in this thread!).

I browse less often than I used to, but still pretty regularly. I haven't been posting as much as I'd like because I'm in my first year of graduate school and it's eating up a huge chunk of my mental bandwidth. I'll see a discussion going on that I want to join, but when I think about settling in and expressing myself through writing... I just feel so tired.

I'm with Retrogamer0001 in thinking that things might pick up in the summer, when schools and universities are closed.

I would also say to those that crave conversation...come to the IRC channel. I am there pretty consistently and there is TONS of conversation happening, even though it is with the same 3 or 4 folks!

Racketboy isn't a massive community, but that's fine. There's enough of those for gaming and most of them are awful even if they have their uses.
