Wired PS3 Controller Recommendations?

Post by Omerta »

I'm not a huge fan of wireless controllers. I'm also pretty sure I'm going to wear out the batteries on my Dualshock 3's somewhere down the road and I strongly dislike keeping them plugged in to the short charging cord. I was wondering...

Does Sony make an official USB wired PS3 controller?

If not, does anyone have any third-party recommendations?

I've been eyeballing the Rock Candy brand because I kinda like the idea of the left joystick and the D-Pad switching positions in the same vein as the 360 controller. Does anyone have any experience with these?

I would just get a longer USB cable and save the $$$ if you need a wired solution.

That's a possibility.

I've had issues in the past (on the 360) where I've used the USB charging cable on a wireless controller, but the constant tilt of the controller toward me along with the weight of the cable over an extended period of time has damaged the molded connector to the point of uselessness. I'll examine the controller set up and try to figure out some sort of an electrical tape job to put some more support on any weak points that are apparent.

Thanks for the input.

I have one that's modeled like the 360 controller. I got it at Target, it's called the PowerA.

It's pretty stout with sturdy analog sticks, but the D-pad kinda sucks, so definitely wouldn't recommend it for fighters. It has an 11 ft. cord, so the reach is decent as well.

I picked it up for $25.

This is the most popular one on Amazon seems to have good reviews overall.

Yeah, USB ports aren't the most durable thing.

You could take a DualShock3 controller, a ~10' USB cable (preferably good quality) and hardwire it to the controller. It'd be simple. Just open the controller, remove the mini USB port, cut that end of the USB cable off, solder four wires, and that's about it. Maybe remove the battery, and you'll have to find a way to keep the wire secure (usually by wrapping around something inside the controller).

I'd buy a PS4 controller and hook it up to the PS3 with a USB cable. The PS4 controller is just really good and since it works with the PS3..... why not?

Wow I had no clue that is awesome  . Makes me want a PS4 even more lol. Love that they put a fully functional audio jack in the controller as well.

The only catch is it has to be wired. It doesn't work wirelessly. Well, that and course the audio jack and touch pad don't work on PS3.

The audio jack on the PS4 controller is great, but IMO the chat adapter for the Xbox One makes that setup even better. The simple feat of having volume control and chat/audio mixing directly on the controller is fantastic. It's a little lame to control on the PS4.
