Another idea: The evolution of fighting games.
If each mistake being made is a new one, then progress is being made.

Reading the SMS article made me wish for an SG-1000 article.

Also, I don't think you can go wrong doing something on the 2nd gen consoles like the Atari 2600, Colecovision and Intellivision. A little older than what you normally cover, but it's the beginning of home gaming as we know it.
