Re: What games did you buy despite bad reviews?
The last Turok for the 360/PS3, got some really harsh reviews but I simply loved it. The same for the new Golden Axe, not a great game by any means but entertaining enough.
Oh, and I just remembered, Dragonheart on the Saturn. Looks like very single person on earth besides me hates that game, but to this day it's one of my favourite games on the Saturn.

Lots of games, but ones that pop into my head right now are Spikeout: Battle Street, Final Fight: Streetwise and Ninety-Nine Nights. I guess I'm thinking about 3D beat-em-ups lately.

YepBootaaay wrote:SHMUPS are always reviewed badly because the review probably has zero experience of the genre outside of an r-type game they played over a decade ago. It's always the exact same complaints;
. Too short, you can complete the game in 30 minutes
. Not enough depth
. Not enough incentive to keep playing
Without realising that a) it's meant to be short, now try completing it on Manic without using more than 1 credit b) the chaining system the reviewer totally ignored or was unaware of is what usually provides depth in a shooter and c) the incentive is to complete the game on a single credit and improve your scores. Pretty much the only reason Ikaruga XBLA scored remotely well is because of how well regarded it is by it's rabid cult-following.

Landstalker is a Genesis title, are you thinking Timestalkers? That game definately has some major design flaws...but has enjoyable parts.Jmenglan wrote:I would have to say another Dreamcast game, Landstalker. The game has horrible design flaws but I kept playing through it and had some good times with it.
Games that come to mind are:
Whip Rush. Tons of reviews I've read and people on forums have nothing but bad things to say about this game, but I bought it for 3 bucks and think its a fun title. Not amazing, but fun.
Shining Wisdom. It didn't really get bad reviews, but very mediocre, and alot people on forums don't really think much of it either. It's a Shining game and I had to buy it anyway. I like it, so shut it critics.
Zelda Windwaker. Alot of Zelda fans seem to hate this game. Personally I enjoyed it and loved the visual style.
Imperium. Every review sais this game is as average as they get. i picked it up for 5 bucks and heartily agree. average as they come.
I agree with the shmups comment. Reviewers that don't really play them to often are not usually very accurate in their "take" of the game. That being said, games like Gradius V still get good reviews. Maybe it's name recognition or the Treasure connecection, but also that game universaly rocks and it's hard for anyone to deny that.

IGN gave God Hand a 3.0 or something like that. Butt I dunno if that counts since other people loved it.
I loved Wild 9 on the PS1. Don't think that reviewed too well.

One that comes to mind was Castlevania: Curse of Darkness. Mediocre reviews, but I played the hell out of it.

Same for me with God Hand. Poorly reviewed by at least IGN but a fun and funny game that I've enjoyed quite a bit. Actually this was probably the review that made me start to second guess IGN in general (for good or bad reviews).IGN gave God Hand a 3.0 or something like that. Butt I dunno if that counts since other people loved it.

im not sure since its quite old but Megarace might be another one. I recall a review somewhere trashing the game for the FMV sequences which i thought were quite funny in a annoying smug way (although 2's are just plain annoying to anybody who has seen them).
Ill never forget that voice
"speeding up, slowing up, mabe even blowing up!"
heres the intro
and how could you hate the particle accelerator!!!
also the musics pretty awesome too

I bought Gunfighter: the legend of Jesse James. I'm not going to lie its hard but its not that bad of a guncon game. not worthy of a 4.6.
