Best tv for my gaming?
Best tv for my gaming?
Ok I know I've tried asking this in odd places but I think this should be the right place to ask. I'm working on my game collection(which will only consist if games I'll play). But I've no clue what tv or switcher to be looking at. The current coming soon system I'm going to try to have and might have connected consist of the following: original wii, NES, SNES, n64, ps4, wii u(the snes is coming and u I plan to get especially when hd zelda launches) and possibly some earlier models of the ps(just for the fact there's a good bit of games that I really want to own physically on earlier ps systems since I never got to finish them after I found and subsequently fell in love with them). I kinda want to avoid needing/having two tvs for now if I can and consolidate it to one. I kinda want the best I can get while I'm trying to get a idea of what to get by the end of summer. Especially because once next month hits I'm going to try and set up a special savings acct I will devote directly for gaming and such....

For the best possible experience, you will need 2 tvs, one a CRT for older systems and an HD for the last gen and up. The NES and SNES will look like garbage on a tv the fully utilizes the PS4, not to mention you cannot play light gun games on an HD tv. You have to have a CRT. Check out some of the gamerooms posted on the forums. Some have 2+ tvs and look fantastic. Another option is to get a Retron 5 when it is released. It will be HD compatible but won't utilize light guns. It is a kind of conundrum, luckily CRTs are very cheap now a days

If you really want to find a nice middle ground for all those systems in one TV, you may want to look into an HD CRT. CRTGAMER on here would know a whole lot more about this than I; you might want to hit him up.

I have an HDCRT and it looks amazing for all systems using s-video and up, unfortunately composite looks horrible on it as it gets horrible motion blurring. Not sure if this is just my TV or a common thing among HDCRTsTSTR wrote:If you really want to find a nice middle ground for all those systems in one TV, you may want to look into an HD CRT. Yea, like mentioned before. If you have the space, get 2 TVs. One Sony WEGA and one HDTV.
Agreed. I don't have a Sony WEGA, but I saw a Saturn via S-Video on a WEGA and my eyes (which are used to HDTV CRT) thought the WEGA was incredible. It looked better than emulators.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Go to Goodwill.

I think it varies TV to TV. My composite on my HDTV CRT looks pretty good for composite. But the S-Video sucks (little difference between composite and S Video on my Saturn).ninjainspandex wrote: I have an HDCRT and it looks amazing for all systems using s-video and up, unfortunately composite looks horrible on it as it gets horrible motion blurring. Mine doesn't have a blurring problem. Composite stuff looks pretty good on it.ninjainspandex wrote:I have an HDCRT and it looks amazing for all systems using s-video and up, unfortunately composite looks horrible on it as it gets horrible motion blurring. Though mine does have a blown IC as a result it has some noticeable bowing
An HD CRT is your only choice. The PS4 requires HDMI, so SD is out. LCD has trouble making anything look particularly great, especially scaled stuff, Plasma is susceptible to uniformity issues (burn in).
The downside is HDCRT TVs aren't exactly cheap. And not all of them even have HDMI.
I have a Samsung set, the picture is phenomenal, but like I said above, it does have some issues (though it's likely from standard TV over-voltage garbage), Though the TV was about $500 ... and it's not extremely common. Oh, also, HD CRT TVs are extremely heavy. Moving one, generally, requires two people.
The most sensible option really is to get two sets.
Something you may want to consider, for your HDMI stuff, consider getting a computer monitor. It's extremely simple to connect over HDMI, and audio connections are usually possible. And those are fairly cheap, just not enormous in size. Then getting a nice CRT for your SD stuff. Even the Wii over component only does 480p and lots of CRT TVs support that. And an SD CRT is the only way for lightguns to work.

You might want to consider one of those XRGB-Minis. Lot of people on this website like them. I think you might consider getting one if you want to stick with one TV set.

Re: Best tv for my gaming?
I use two televisions.
HDTV is only for my HD consoles - PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U.
I use the WEGA for everything else.
Works out well.

I can attest to the awesomeness of the xrgb-mini. It really makes your retro systems look almost identical to the quality of emulators using RGB. Only downside is that the price is steep, $300+ and each system usually needs a different setting and there are no programmable buttons (not sure if there is a new update that fixes that)sp957 wrote:You might want to consider one of those XRGB-Minis.
