This is essentially why my wife and I will not move to the city even if it means her commute would be drastically shorter. The schools in the surrounding towns are 100 times better.

I agree Ivo, we are all different and have different needs. My wife grewup in the country, and needs to have space. We are as close as we can be, without paying through the nose on property taxes. The difference between the county I am in and the one that is barely a mile north is almost double. Sure we could rent an apartment, but in the area near my wife's job it would cost us more than our mortgage and utilities.

The nicest part for me of having a house vs. being in an apartment is I'm insulated from other people. In the apartment there's always someone on the other side of your walls and floor and ceiling. You gotta worry about how much noise you might be making, or you get annoyed by the noise they make. Not really an issue in the house (sure, you still can't throw a rave in your house, but you don't have to worry about normal activity).

This is EXACTLY why I've been looking into getting a house. Man, would I love to be able to make a noise without it disturbing someone (and vice versa).

Oh man this is so true! I'm staying in an apartment now and it's insane to me how much noise my girls make stomping through everywhere and before I just didn't care all that much, now I have to tell them to keep it down and they look at me like I'm crazy. Why, why would we be quiet? ;)

I live in a house out in the wilderness. I can't see any other houses from this house. It owns.

Well how else are you going to play the banjo as the spaceships go by?

The real negative of living in an apartment in my city is that it is a college town. Even if you live in a luxury apartment you'll probably end up living next to some nineteen year old prick who drives a bmw his Daddy bought for him and has no clue that some people go to this place called "work". College kids should live around college kids. But the best part of living in an apartment was definitely not having to fix a thing. That and not having to wash the exterior of your dwelling.

I hope to live in the house I currently reside in for the rest of my life. Love it. If we have kids, we have plenty of empty rooms. Neighbors are great, neighborhood is established, bunch of beautiful homes, the HOA is actually helpful, we have a neighborhood park with a baseball diamond, and the streets are broad and perfect for bike rides and running.

Plus everything seems to be, at the most, fifteen-twenty minutes away.

That sounds awesome.

And yep, I hear ya with the college-town apartments; I'm the only one in my 4-person apartment that's out of school, and for example, I was awoken at 2:30 this morning with Biggie blaring right above my head. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Biggie Smalls, but after asking my roommate to turn it down (he had some guests over, too), I gave up and had to walk to my girlfriend's place around 3 a.m.

Needless to say, I'm counting the days until I leave this apartment. I love all the guys I'm living with, but unfortunately, we're in different stages right now, and they are no longer a good roommate match for me :/
