Great Shmups with couch co-op on PS3?
Great Shmups with couch co-op on PS3?
A genre I'm trying to get into. Can anyone recommend me a great one with couch co-op on the ps3? I'm thinking about picking up Under Defeat HD, is that any good? The Raiden series might be a bit too hardcore for me.

Only one i have is Sonic Wings Special, and thats a PS1 Classic title on PSN.
But it is 2 players.

I believe Castle Shikigami II is on PSN!
Playing that game co-op is what ended up dragging me far too deep into the genre. The characters have dialogue in between stages, and it actually changes depending on the combo. Normally this wouldn't matter, since no one plays shmups for dialogue, but Shiki II has the best/worst translation I've seen. You'll end up playing just to see what madness could come out of their mouths next.
Also, the game is fun! It has a pretty wide variety of characters that all play quite differently. Its bullet hell, but it doesn't come off like Ketsui or something. The bullets are fairly slow and give you time to think (and get really close to them for score, if thats your thing!). The game gives you limited credits that you unlock as you play, so you and your friend can always be progressing.

Thanks, I'll take that into consideration. I'm just hoping that a PS2 game doesn't look too bad graphically on a HD TV.
Soldner-X seems interesting, but I'd rather play a vertical shooter.
Too bad, Mamorukun is single player only.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest Ketsui. It's as hardcore as shmups come, but it also has a very good arrange mode that's not as difficult as arcade mode. If you can look past the extreme difficulty, you'll find one of the very best shmups ever made! The graphics, gameplay, and especially the music are all second to none. It was a JP only release but as with all PS3, it's region free.
