dragon quest games

Post by nickfil »

Word on the internet is that dragon quest 10 got announced for the wii.

I've never played a dragon quest game, but I am always looking forward to nintendo only wii games that use the interface in a creative or logical way. I think that any RPG would be a good fit for the wii.

So my question is this: if i was going to play one dragon quest game to maybe orient myself with the series, which would be the one to play? With 9 games, the task is a little daunting. Which is the "good one"?

I am into RPGs, but only if they are exceptional and really pull me in within the first couple hours of play. Turn based, action, strategy- its all good. The last one i really loved was mass effect, and the one that i currently put 3 or 4 hours in that i'm 'meh' on is the first star ocean remake for psp. I recently played through chrono trigger, final fantasy 6, and Zelda minish cap so I don't really need big graphics- just solid gameplay and story.

any recommendations?

All of them are pretty decent, but I would recommend DQVIII the most. It's probably the most accessible and stylish one of the series.

Honestly though, all the NES and SNES ones are pretty well received. DQVII is pretty divided.

I've been a DW fan since the 80s and Gotta agree with Flack DQVIII is one of the best in the series. Its a lot of game and fun for the price, I spent 120 hrs on it and never got bored. Theres so much to do and see and its got a great story.

I was sucked in after the very first one (and I just played it this year so it's not nostalgia talking). The thing that I like most about it was that it was that I never felt like I was wasting my time. If you die, you do not restart at your last save point. You just appear back at the castle with the same amount of experience and half of your money. I haven't played any after V but all that I did play was really good. I'd say start at the first one just to see how the series progresses.

It hasn't been released yet, comes out on the DS sometime in early 2009.

I'll throw in another vote for Dragon Quest VIII. It still has that very classic feel that all Dragon Quest games have, but still has all the necessary modern conveniences.

I played the first one a couple years ago, and I did feel like I was wasting my time. Castles are just so far apart, it's grind, grind, grind for an hour before you even get where you're going. Then it's more grinding to the bottom of the dungeon. If you die, you don't lose experience, but you do lose all that time you invested in getting to the cave. A few more checkpoints would have made the game a lot more playable.

I haven't played any of the other ones. Did they address this issue at all?
