I had the same build, except I did have some magic; namely the iron body or whatever spell. Back when I was playing through Dark Souls that was before they nerfed that spell, and it made being melee much easier.Retrogamer0001 wrote:Wait until you fight the final boss of Dark Souls - I was a straight melee character, no magic at all, and must have died fifty times fighting that bastard. It shares some of the same issues as Demon's but is a better game I think.

Playing through this now. Having a blast....love the creepy and bleak atmosphere of the game.
So far the most frustating deaths are when I fall into a hole or off a cliff. Argh!

The end boss can be an absolute nightmare if you're straight melee - one of his attacks permanently drain soul levels from you (it also ignores shields) and he has one of the strongest move-sets in the game.graffix_13 wrote:Playing through this now. Yeah, I remember when I first tried him he absolutely slaughtered me in short order, then I cheesed him hardcore.Retrogamer0001 wrote:The end boss can be an absolute nightmare if you're straight melee - one of his attacks permanently drain soul levels from you (it also ignores shields) and he has one of the strongest move-sets in the game.graffix_13 wrote:Playing through this now. Rat ring and arrows? My favorite build so far was my glass cannon wizard, rat ring, morion blade, insanity catalyst and the wizard robes you get from the invasion boss fight. I also had that sword that takes your life away slowly to get myself in the "danger zone".MrPopo wrote:Yeah, I remember when I first tried him he absolutely slaughtered me in short order, then I cheesed him hardcore.Retrogamer0001 wrote:The end boss can be an absolute nightmare if you're straight melee - one of his attacks permanently drain soul levels from you (it also ignores shields) and he has one of the strongest move-sets in the game.graffix_13 wrote:Playing through this now. You know thinking back that is probably one of the best ways I've ever seen to do a boss fight.

It was Rat Ring + Toxic Cloud (or whatever it was called). Run up, cast cloud which doesn't aggro, he takes a bunch of poison damage while I go and hide just in case, then when it wears off repeat.

Same thing for me - I tried and tried, and died and died, so I eventually just said to hell with it and cheesed him. Gywn, the final boss of Dark Souls though, I went head-to-head with legitimately and beat him...after about 50 deaths...MrPopo wrote:It was Rat Ring + Toxic Cloud (or whatever it was called). I didn't have too many problems with Gwyn once I switched to a faster weapon (was using the Dragon Tooth as part of a full Havel's set). I think I ended up dying less to him than I did to the mobs before him. Not because they were necessarily hard, but because I kept getting cocky.Retrogamer0001 wrote:Same thing for me - I tried and tried, and died and died, so I eventually just said to hell with it and cheesed him. Re: Demon's Souls
Yeah I'm basically a melee build. Putting all my points into STR and now DEX. I'm using the Meat Cleaver and I've upgraded my bow to Sticky +5. For boss fights, I usually just sit back and light them up with arrows. I fought The False Idol last night and totally pwned her ass with my bow. I have a shield...but honestly I hardly ever use it. Purple Flame Shield is great, but I usually carry the Adjudicator shield specifically for the regen. I've got my Equip > 50%, as I like to be able to dodge/roll.Retrogamer0001 wrote: The end boss can be an absolute nightmare if you're straight melee - one of his attacks permanently drain soul levels from you (it also ignores shields) and he has one of the strongest move-sets in the game.
So far, Tower of Latria is my favorite level. I have yet to enter Valley of Defilement (I hear this is the toughest world) though.
Re: Demon's Souls
Valley of Defilement is evil, specifically the second section. Then they remade it in Dark Souls and added in terrible frame rates. The version in Dark Souls 2 is much better; it hits the oppressive atmosphere without utterly kicking you in the balls with "fuck you" mechanics.
