My guess is that they were like "shit, this Beatrix character is super badass, we need more of her".

Cannot disagree more on Necron. It's just plain old bad writing. I get that it's a "thematic" boss, but there is no reason for it to appear out of the blue. Kuja already has a fair amount of nihilism as an aspect of his character anyway, making Necron slightly redundant anyway. It'd be like if after Vader threw the Emperor down that shaft, Luke had to battle a cloud made of darkside energy or something. Totally unnecessary.

I liked a lot of FFIX, but I felt like a lot of the characters story arcs stopped once Garland gets involved. Then it becomes very focused on Zidane, Kuja and Dagger. This isn't something that's unique to FFIX though.

Oh, I certainly agree that there's no reason for it to appear out of the blue. Do I think Necron could/should have been foreshadowed? Sure, I'm not disagreeing with that. It's also tough when the writers box themselves in like that, making this dude that only pops up when you're dead/the crystal is destroyed. Narratively, yes, they could've found a better way to squeeze it in there. Even saying, like, "omg i heard if you destroy the crystal, stuff stops existing" would have been helpful, haha.

I just liked him is all. I like the thought of having to stave off the ultimate incarnation of nothingness; I think it says more than fighting a nihilistic character. As you said, a "thematic" boss. I totally understand why you don't dig it, but I think it's badass. For me, the poor execution doesn't take away from the character that I think is neat.

And, yeah, but doesn't the story that's being told start to revolve more around Zidane/Kuja at that point? You're well into the third disc by the time you get to Pandemonium, then disc 4 is just the final dungeon. Or are you talking about even before that, when Garland rolls up in the Invincible?

Everybody is talking about Titanfall these days and I could kinda care less. The moment I heard there is no real campaign and no single player I completely lost interest. Giant mechs are awesome, as is parkour and jetpacks... but if there is no interesting progression with closure at the end, I just can't get excited about it. I guess underneath it all it's just a multiplayer shooter along the lines of CoD and BF, games that I am also uninterested in.

People who call FF7 mediocre but call another FF an all time great makes no sense to me. All of the FFs are "written poorly". They're all LCD RPGs, they're made to be accessible and be entry gate-esque RPGs. The idea that FF7 was only liked by 13 year olds is laughable and totally revisionist history.

Well considering FFV was the last FF that Sakaguchi actually directed himself, I can understand your sentiment.
Explains why it is so much better than VI.

I still don't know anything about Titanfall. Like, literally nothing. I see now that it's about mechs? Word. :o

Isn't this an opinion, though? Can't people have different opinions about which games they do and don't like? Or are you making a different statement than this?

That's always what's it's supposed to have been, but reinvigorated and freshened up a bit.

I think if Necron had been an optional boss it would have been fine but if you like him that's fine as well. :)

As for the main story, yes I think once Garland attacks Alexandria the story enters an new phase where the focus is on the aforementioned characters. That's the last scene of disc two? It is reasonably far in, but I don't think Freya, Vivi, Steiner or Eiko actually have much to do after that point as far as their personal interactions go. Regent Cid is more important and that's mainly because he is doling out airships.

I'm with you. Add in that it's on a new console I have 0 interest in buying and I've not even been reading anything tthat popped up on my usual reads and I've been doing my best to ignore the hype monster.

I couldn't care less about TitanFall.
I haven't cared about competitive multi-player in ten years.
