Ouya Review...

Post by artphotodude »

We generally think of reviews that come out right away as being the most interesting; either to confirm or deny our preconceived notions of a new console, but in many cases, like the PS2 and 3DS, they really needed to 'season' for a while to reach their potential. The Ouya is such a thing, and has grown in a year from kinda disappointing to kinda badass!

The issues with the interface, limited storage and blah initial software, have been overcome and now there is a console with a snappy interface, limitless USB storage and a library of HUNDREDS of unique and worth-your-time titles. After playing the system for about 2 weeks, I can report a solid 40%-50% of the games being very playable if not seriously worth owning and variety and eclectic selection that was pretty much exactly what most of us hoped for.

Action/Adventure, RPGs, Shooters, Arcade, Puzzle and yes even some AMAZING rhythm games can be found on the system, with about the only genres underrepresented being horror and racing.

The ability to use a lot of excellent Android apps like the incredible Dolphin web-browser (works very well with Flash, much like a full desktop browser) and Netflix don't hurt either. Coupled with the network-friendly Ouya build of XMBC, the console has the potential to be a serious home media player. There is even a handy interface to easily enable BlueTooth Keyboards!

Is it perfect? No.

Is the controller as good as the Dual Shock? No, but is better than most 3rd party controllers.

Are frame-rates rock solid?
Nope, but not bad either on most titles.

The Ouya is about VALUE - Pure and Simple. It is lovingly-crafted shared experience: something you don't find much in the Digital Age.
