CRT monitor colors get messed up if I TATE?
As the title says. I picked up a HP Pavilion MX70 monitor and it looks great. But I went to TATE it and when I do the colors get all washed out and distorted. Red/orange looks green and so on. Not right. So I put it back to YOKO for fear I messed something up, but it instantly corrected itself in YOKO... any ideas???

It is normal and is to do with the magnet in the CRT.
If your monitor has a Degaussing feature, use it and it should fix it almost instantly.
If not put the TV in TATE, turn it off and let it sit for 30mins to an hour (long enough for it to 'cool down'.) then turn it on, should be in full 'normal color'. Repeat when returning to normal.

Have care, most CRT TVs and Monitors do not have adequate internal CRT supports for Tate rotation. Bigger and heavier CRT TVs are where it is real critical to watch for this. Still, might be good to pop the cover of that smaller computer monitor to see if the tube is secure, just have care of the high voltage at the fat Flyback cables even when unplugged.
Hope you tried House Of The Dead Lightgun with that VGA CRT monitor!

Eh. Monitor was $5. I feel like if I broke it doing TATE, I'd just buy another at a yard sale or thrift shop and not feel too broken up about it.
I don't know what this means, but I feel like I should be nervous?CRTGAMER wrote:just have care of the high voltage at the fat Flyback cables even when unplugged.
Not yet, but excited to do so. I have 2 guns but no game. HOTD2 is one of me and my wife's favorite co-op games.Hope you tried House Of The Dead Lightgun with that VGA CRT monitor!

It is the fat cable plugged into the back of the tube. Your VGA monitor is small so the tube is not near as heavy as say a HDCRT. However, if that tube does drop out of its mounts then you will definitely have a dangerous firework show on your desk. Only way to be sure is look inside; just keep clear of the CRT connections.noiseredux wrote:Eh. Monitor was $5. Note the cradle at the base when my WEGA sits normally, there is no cradle on the sides. If rotated that tube could crack off the front bezel mounts where the top corners are only supported by screws going thru plastic.
You can see the fat Flyback Cable going into the tube above the center "gun" with the rubber boot.
2 lightguns! I can't believe you have not gotten House Dead yet. All the lightgun games should work thru your VGA CRT, give the ones you have a "shot".

Re: CRT monitor colors get messed up if I TATE?
well my Google searching says that opening up this particular monitor is no easy task.
I'll most likely end up replacing this monitor once I find a bigger 4:3 LCD. But it'll do for now. No worries on the lightguns, as I've still got my other DC hooked up to a larger CRT TV.

Oh no, you will be missing out the light gun shooting in the higher res of 640x480! Give it a try before you "down grade" the CRT PC monitor to LCD, I think you'll be impressed how quickly the gun responds in VGA mode.noiseredux wrote:well my Google searching says that opening up this particular monitor is no easy task.

Re: CRT monitor colors get messed up if I TATE?
Don't get me wrong, there's plus and minus for both. That said, my main concern is shmups and fighters right? So that means lots of going back and forth between TATE and YOKO. In which case, an LCD on a rotating stand is probably a much better (easier?) solution. But having said all that, any upgrades are dependent on what I might happen upon at a yard sale, haha.CRTGAMER wrote:Oh no, you will be missing out the light gun shooting in the higher res of 640x480! I don't think there is much danger in TATE'ing a small to mid-size CRT, it's the 32" and larger that may not be a good idea. If you plan on rotating one that size - i'd rotate to the position you want and let it sit there a good 24 hours before plugging in. Look for any stressors in the housing or any obvious cracking or straining sounds when you rotate it.
I have quite a few CRT's in permanent rotate w/o issues - but again, nothing massive.
I'm fortunate to work in a hospital - the guys in bio-med know i'm into retro gaming and always offer me medical monitors before recycling them. I picked up 2 more today and now have 6 total. I could grab another 20 if I had the room - sadly, they'll end up recycled soon.
These TV's are great in that they are built specifically as hospital units - so they are designed to be lightweight so they can wall mount and they are designed with perfectly rectangular shapes for dual purpose monitor as medical monitors for old EKG's and whatnot I presume. Most have been in storage in the hospital for years, they are slowly upgrading to LCD's throughout and now that the project is over - these are on the chopping block. With the rectangular shape - they are a super easy rotate.
