St. Patrick's day is an excuse for obnoxiousness. Most holidays are awesome, but most holidays aren't centered around drinking yourself stupid at 7am while wearing a Kiss Me I'm Irish t-shirt and green beads. Oh, and they don't even eat corned beef in Ireland.

You're picking and choosing parts of Americanized St. Patrick's day festivities to support the idea it's an obnoxious holiday. Stupid drunk people at 7am are stupid drunk people - they are using a holiday as an excuse to drink - they are not celebrating the holiday that most Irish, or Irish-Americans celebrate.

I wouldn't really say I'm picking and choosing parts of the Americanized St. Patrick's Day festivities. That is the Americanized St. Patrick's Day, an excuse to drink.

Now, the activities you are doing with your family do sound fun, but as someone without a single drop of Irish blood(that I know of)in him, my kids have no idea tomorrow is anything other than another Monday. I'm sure we'll put some green clothing on them so they don't get pinched(btw, who came up with that one?) but other than that just another day. In our household I'd say the 4th of July is our biggest holiday outside of the big 3.

Yeah, drinking yourself into oblivion isn't part of tradition. Neither is wearing a Kiss me an Irish t-shirt, nor listening to House of Pain.

As with every holiday at Luke Manor, it's about having friends and family over for food and fun; it's a chance to show your appreciation for one another during a certain seasonal theme. And it doesn't matter that Saint Patrick wasn't Irish, or that they don't eat corned bread in Ireland. That's not the point.

Like any holiday it's a "Hey, we don't get to do this often" circumstance. When else would I dye beer green? When else would my friends actually drink a Guinness* at room temperature (as it should be).

Plus it's the only day my wife lets me play Irish fol music loudly.

Is Patio furniture Irish?

Ol' Finnegan just came out of the closet. Yup, he's Gaelic.

One of the big disconnects I think I have apart from you guys is that I grew up in an area of Chicago that was basically full of immigrants from either Ireland, Germany, or Poland.

Everyone still celebrated Saint Patrick's Day, and as you all know, it's a HUGE deal in the windy city. If you were Irish, you were expected to have the day off of both school or work. All the Irish kids were absent on St. Patrick's Day either to celebrate or perform in some sort of parade or gathering.

Now everyone go watch the episode of the Simpsons where Bart goes to the Paddy's Parade and talk about stereotypes.

Smile: Just got back from lunch with my soon-to-be wife. We celebrated St. Patricks Day today so we can avoid the tomfoolery that will be this evening and tomorrow (Honestly it's been going on all weekend here at Ann Arbor.) Sat in the Irish pub, had some corned beef, cabbage, and potatoes. She had a shepherd's pie. We both drank a Smithwick's.

And yes it was boiled. I'm sure there are more delicious ways of cooking it. But for Irish-American families from a working class background, it's a bit of a family tradition of cooking and definitely a comfort food. Put it all in a big kettle together, and cook it. I liken it to southern comfort foods, which also have a familial heritage and a specific way things are cooked. Circumstantially they all taste delicious.

I can deal without the kiss me I'm Irish, wear an abundance of green, and use the day as an excuse to get wasted into smithereens.

Extra Smile: Arsenal vs. Tottenham was on, and it's always lovely to be able to watch the North London Derby. The Gunners played lovely today.

Anyway, I'm in the camp that St. Patricks' Day is an excuse to have a delicious meal w/ family that we only do once a year. Like Thanksgiving.

@Mike: I'm trilled you do the footprints for the kids. Even after I stopped believing in Santa I thought that Leprechauns must be real. I mean, my dad was pissed every year that he had to clean up the green mud they tracked in the house.

That is odd. Usually they just do 2 business day.

Lucky you! We can't even get our mailman to deliver our mail on a Saturday.
