Haha, I imagine your neighborhood is more reasonable than others in other states. Maybe you should venture a social experiment!

I love St. Patrick's Day and I believe it should be celebrated with boiled dinner -- corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, rutabaga. It's my favorite meal to eat ever, and I've always enjoyed our Irish Heritage. My mom's side of the family is Irish even though their surname is German. Since my birthday is only a month after, when my family would ask what I'd want to eat on my birthday, I'd always beg my grandfather to make boiled dinner.

It should be finished with a Guinness, Smithwick's, or a nice Irish Cider like Bulmer's. Tullamore Dew is also nice for the occasion too.

NEVER EVER EVER BOIL CORNED BEEF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU'LL RUIN IT!

In a sturdy oven safe baking pan, about two inches deep, add enough water to where it comes up right at around 3/4's of an inch high. Place a baking/roasting rack on top of that, hovering above the water.

Place corned beef on rack, fat side up, and tent with foil.

Cook at 350, a few hours per pound, adding water to the baking pan in needed. For the last half hour of cooking, remove the foil and set oven to broil.

The water never touches the brisket, and you end up with a tender, flavor brisket that falls apart in your mouth, but not when you slice it.

Serving mine with steamed cabbage and caraway, red potatoes, and soda bread w/ Guinness butter. I have a few Irish folk records to play as well including The Brogues, The Dubliners, The Sean O'Neil Band, and an assortment of other favorites.

For drinks I'll make Irish punch, Irish coffee, and shots of whisky for "No, Nay, Never". I take this holiday very seriously ;)

But seriously, don't boil your corned beef.

Looking forward to that boiled dinner too, Blu. Love that stuff w/ lots of mustard. And Guinness for sure. Usually a shot of Jameson's... one of the very few times a year I'll take a shot actually.

Dave's mad because no one wants to hang out with him on the holidays.

But I'm with you, Luke. Boiling meat is bad. The only things that should be boiled are pasta and soup if you're using a pressure cooker.

But it could be ever so much more delicious. When you boil food, all you are doing is taking out flavor.

Roast the Corned beef.
Braise the potatoes.
Steam the cabbage.

Would you microwave a Rib Roast? Boil Thanksgiving Day Turkey? 'Cause that's essentially what you're doing to your brisket. Just trying to help you guys realize how much flavor you are missing out on.

And please never use the word "foodie", unless you're referring to the grocery store that Al Bundy shops at and once lived in.
