Streaming is great for me for TV shows, since I rarely buy series nowadays. However when my DVD collection broke 1000 I started selling them off (down to about 300). Now it is back to about 500.

I break it down a bit differently than most people. If I am at a garage sale or shop and see a film I have an interest in watching for sale for sub $2, I will likely buy it, dvd or bluray. VHS it has to be .25cents or less unless it is something I really want to see/did not get a dvd release. For example, two weeks ago we were at a Piggly Wiggly and they had former rental dvds for $2 each if you bought atleast 2. So we bought 4:
1. Pleasantville
2. Kick Ass
3. Me and Orson Welles
4. Robin Hood Men in Tights
So for $8, we bought atleast two nights of entertainment.
Typically I break down entertainment buying to cost over hours of enjoyment. So if I buy a game for $50, beat it in 10 hours, and dont play it again in the near future, it is $5 an hour. It makes it easier for me to work things out. So $2 movie, 2 hours long, watch it twice and it is easily worth me buying on DVD - if I have the spare money and space ofcourse.

But back on topic. In my eyes, DVD videowise is sufficient for most films. So DVD is the benchmark. If a film is properly restored, a Bluray is a worthy purchase, see Wizard of Oz or the James Bond films, but there have been some absolutely horrible transitions, the original bluray of The French Connection for example. Would I love to have every film I own on the best format possible? Ofcourse, but I see no reason to upgrade when DVD is good enough. The only reason I started buying Blurays is because I started projecting on a 16ftx9ft screen and some DVDs were just not cutting it.

I'm content to watch a lot of stuff via streaming, but if I'm specifically paying for something, I'll buy it on Blu-ray unless it's not available or (rarely) a pointless conversion (or downgrade). If nothing else, Blu-ray tends to have significantly better audio.

Well mastered DVDs aren't bad either, but for me that tends more to be a matter of not upgrading several hundred of mine to Blu-rays than it means buying DVDs instead. I've upgraded some, but usually only if the Blu-ray is really cheap, or a movie I particularly liked.
