Best Arena Brawler?

Post by Thermoptic »

I would love to fins more good "Arena Brawler" games. Can you recommend your favorites?

Arena Brawler is often a one-screen arena where you battle against your friends.

Here are my favorites: Samurai Gunn (pc) , TowerFall Ascension (pc, ps4, ouya), Super Mario War (pc, xbox, dreamcast, etc)

I guess older games like Bomberman, Mario Bros and Balloon Fight also qualifies as Arena Brawlers. i would love to find more of these Arena games.

Do the Super Smash Bros. games count? If so, I would go with them.

What about the Power Stone series? If we count games like that, then you may want to consider Power Stone (obviously), Power Stone 2 (obviously), Ehrgeiz, Kung Fu Chaos, and Anarchy Reigns.

Powerstone 2 immediately comes to mind in fitting this description. It would be my favorite 'arena brawler', hands down. So much depth and fun to be had in that game.

As I also mentioned in the Towerfall thread, Raskulls... while not a brawler per se, is more like a mix of mario kart, mr. driller, bomberman and super mario world. It's a racing game at it's core, but is SUPER fun with 4 players. Check it out.

Towerfall also looks badass. Trying it on my friend's PS4 this weekend.

I cannot believe that I didn't think of that one. Nice work, Blu.

(Also, there is a Joust 2. IMO, however, it is not as fun as the original.)

EDIT: Castlevania: Judgment (Wii) is another game in the "power stone" category, but not a lot of people like it.

I used to really enjoy Liero back in the day.

Quite the hidden gem I think, possibly more known in Europe.

Kudos on spelling "Judgment" correctly (or rather how it's spelled on the box anyway).
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

You know what I do for a living, right?

A good friend of mine - who is from Pakistan and attended an English primary school - got hammered on a law school final for using "judgement" (which is the English spelling of the word).

Along the lines of Joust, another great Arena Brawler would be the Atari 2600's Combat!

I can not tell you how much time I spent playing this as a child and how I still find enormous amounts of enjoyment playing it to this day. The varied modes, maps and vehicles provide almost unlimited fun.

Other good ones would be Custom Robo for the Gamecube, where you build your robot and fight.

Virtual-On Oratorio Tengram which you can get on various platforms including Xbox Live is another great mech arena brawler. The controls really take some getting used to, but after a while, it becomes a great experience.

Hope that was of some help!
