Anyone playing Chrono Trigger DS?
Re: Anyone playing Chrono Trigger DS?
The one that has the boss that's a big skeleton like from Zenon Bridge? Nope, that's always been there.

<spoilers> Well with Crono gone it's a bit hard to beat that boss. I can't cast Slow on it either. But I'm enjoying the game very much. I made a save before the confrontation with Magus so that I'll return to that point and get at least a few more endings without having to start from scratch. I let myself be defeated by Dalton's monster at the Palace earlier so I wonder if that has any bearing on the outcome?</spoilers>
I find the low res a bit detrimental at times, but the port is nicely done nonetheless.

Dying to the first Golem doesn't matter, aside from I think you miss out on some Exp and a non-unique drop. You still get kicked out.

So I still fail to see the point in the monster arena. I got my critter to transform twice, and maxed out all his stats besides magic defense. Now what? It's nothing but a gamble. You pay a crazy high fee, fight a super easy monster 95% of the time, and about 50% of the time, you win an item that's value is on par with what you paid to enter. It seems so pointless.
Re: Anyone playing Chrono Trigger DS?
Well I thought the arena was pointless as well and decided to ignore it completely. I just finished the game using Crono/Ayla/Frog and their triple combo, which was (too much?) devastating for Lavos. Clocked it in less than 26 hours, with all (original) side quests complete. One thing I didn't get was how Frog became human again in the animated ending? I kept Magus in the group but he didn't address Frog at all. Perhaps I should have beaten him using Frog only? And who was the infant in the ending? Magus' sister?

Re: Anyone playing Chrono Trigger DS?
Speaking of the FMVs, why do they play out a specific scene, and then when they end, we watch the same scene again, but in it's original sprite form. It just seems odd. I think the FMVs should just replace the sprite scenes by default, and the game should just have an option to play classic style, with the sprite scenes restored, and no FMVs at all.Pulsar_t wrote:Well I thought the arena was pointless as well and decided to ignore it completely. I agree. It felt redundant. Luckily there weren't many cutscenes, and the characters didn't speak either.
One other thing I wished they'd done was explaining the story behind Lavos, like they did with FFX's Sin (and rather extensively!).. I haven't played many JRPGs (less than a dozen) but Chrono Trigger is definitely a keeper. I still like FFX better though. It felt 'deeper' and had an interesting (if a bit cliched) twist.

No matter how good the story of FFX supposedly is, those were the worst characters in the series. I'll never be able to tolerate them.Pulsar_t wrote:I agree. It felt redundant. Luckily there weren't many cutscenes, and the characters didn't speak either.

Re: Anyone playing Chrono Trigger DS?
I just could not slog through FFX. I pushed for 20 hours and just realized that nothing about it appealed to me.
Re: Anyone playing Chrono Trigger DS?
Five years ago FFX seemed brilliant to me despite the horrendous character design and dialogue. But if I were to play it now I'd probably give up on it from the very start. Likewise with FFVII, I just couldn't get on it but since I'm playing it ten years after release I can't be blamed really.
What's baffling to me is the attachment people have developed to the FFVII universe. Basically all spin-offs and the movie are shallow but people keep buying them. Many even bought a PSP for that one FFVII game!
