You guys need to play more western RPGs.
All great games, but none make my top 5. It could be because I didn't play any western RPGs until the early 2000's, so my tastes have the JRPG style as my overall preference. I've certainly put enough time into western RPGs; I enjoy playing them. But JRPGs will probably always be the top for me.

Hmmm...

1. Final Fantasy IX
2. Chrono Trigger
3. Super Mario RPG
4. Final Fantasy V/VI (Can't decide)
5. Final Fantasy V/VI (Can't decide)

It's hard to put things into a "Best" list for me most of the time, as some games I may find more fun than others, but some other games may be more fulfilling (not sure how to make that less confusing, so I'll give an example: I LOVE TES IV: Oblivion, and think it's super fun, and wanted to put it on this list; however, I also play it more as a "number builder" than really getting into the story/characters, so both FFV and FFVI beat it out).

Man I love the first two Fallout games on the PC, but not to play but to watch. Back in the very early 2000's when I was at boarding school my roommate would play for hours and hours and I would just watch it like a Movie, just fascinated.

This. I mean, that said, I certainly haven't put close to as much time into them, so I should definitely do that before making any sort of judgment about them.

5) Grandia - you really feel like your part of the adventure in this one.
4) Final Fantasy VIII - I haven't played this one in awhile, but I do prefer it over the others, I may be a minority here.
3) Panzer Dragoon Saga - this is one game that you can just appreciate how much the developers poured their life and souls into this one, a little too short.
2) Xenogears - no explanation necessary.
1) Chrono Trigger - just too much fun

My definitive list or RPG's that ive played the most, and or have lots of nostalgia for.

1. Diablo 2/LoD - WTT 40 SOJ
2. Final Fantasy VI - Vanish/Doom = Done
3. Pokemon Red/Blue - Not in a hurry!
4. Super Mario RPG - Fertilizer + Seed = Win
5. Secret of Mana - Sword Orb Glitch = Permanent Mana Sword

Honorable Mentions or "These arent the RPG's your looking for!"

1. Legend of Zelda: Alttp
2. Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
3. Darksiders

While i have only played through Wind Waker and Darksiders once each, they were a great non-stop adventure that i wont forget, however i didnt think Darksiders needed a replay as i ended the game with most of the collectibles including the final armor set.

With Wind Waker, the 2nd quest wasnt enticing enough, consdering the only differences i could tell was the armor you started out in, and the Picto thing.

Probably these 5, in no specific order

Mass Effect - My respect for Bioware started with Knights of the Old Republic, but this is the best of the Bioware games I've played and is better than its two sequels. I like the mix of real time shooter action with rpgs elements, and unlike the sequels, it didn't go overboard with the shooter part of that equation. The story was excellent, and despite being the start of a trilogy, functioned quite well as a stand alone story with a satisfying ending that left just enough things open in the end to make you interested in playing the next game, but leaving you wholly satisfied even if you didn't. And screw the haters, I loved the Mako

Skies of Arcadia (Gamecube version) - The game has boatloads of charm, and like Assassin's Creed Black Flag it's impressive how fully committed this game was to the pirate theme. The ship to ship battles were a really neat idea at the time, and years later you see what a key element that is to any pirate game with the fun ship to ship battles in Assassin's Creed Black Flag, as well as the ship to ship battles in the pirate chapter of Sly Cooper 3

Final Fantasy 3 (or 6 depending on region) - I love just about every Final Fantasy game I have played, but this is the one that hooked me into the series and it stands above many others in the series in terms of story telling

Grandia - Super charming characters, much like Skies of Arcadia, and one of the greatest rpgs combat systems ever. Grandia 2 was also great, but not quite as charming and the combat system was slightly stripped down

Valkyria Chronicles - As time goes on I find myself more and more impressed with this game. I've not played another strategy rpg quite like it. It told a good story, had a gorgeous style, had some of the best DLC I've ever seen, was incredibly innovative, blended shooter gameplay with rpg gameplay in a fascinating way, and was just a damn polished game. You could tell a lot of TLC, time and patience went into the making of this game. Some day I need to try the sequels

Honorable mentions:
Final Fantasy XIII - Probably my favorite combat system other than the one in Grandia

Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2 - Ridiculous storytelling and unnecessary Final Fantasy cameos aside, these games may be the best use of the Disney license I've ever seen and feature some of the greatest rpg boss battles ever

The various Mario rpgs - I enjoy how interactive combat is in those games, the fact that you can avoid or block incoming attacks with proper timing versus just watching your characters stand there and get hit like many other traditional rpgs is great

Same.

Though I think if I made a top 50 RPG list it would have like 15 WRPGs.
