Yea, you probably bought that retro bit box. You have better ones on eBay right now, that go for less than 40 bucks.

I believe you can use a hex editor for Soul Caliber and burn it to a CD Rom with VGA capability.

It would appear Soul Calibur had a misprint or bad rips without VGA, not sure what the heck its story is.

My USA original does support VGA.

Link to the original monoprice converter box:

How sure are you that the converter box from ebay is the same and doesn't just look similar to the monoprice one?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VGA-Audio-to-HD ... 43bff766e6

It's quite a bit cheaper, especially considering shipping costs. Which would be nice.

This one on Amazon is even cheaper and can ship with Prime.

But one reviewer mentioned trying it with a Dreamcast, but had a lot of quality issues. It looks the same as all the others, though.. Anyone know if any of these converters vary at all?

Yea, they all look different.

I think it will depend on your TV more than anything tbh. Some TVs are slower/dumber and others are faster/smarter. On one of my HDTVs it has troubles with converters, but my better HDTV has no issue with processing (no input lag).

I would go with the monoprice one if you want to be safe and have a higher chance of getting something working on the first try. I believe some people here said it works for them.

But if you want to save 15-20 dollars, you can try one of those Amazon or eBay ones. I would stay away from the Amazon one because of this review:
I tried using this with my Dreamcast and VGA cord combination. At first, it appeared to work just fine, but when I started to input actions using the controller, the picture on the TV would flicker and the sound would cut out sporadically. I tested the VGA cord and HDMI cord separately and they worked perfectly fine. When I hooked this up to a different TV, the sound was horrid. Overall, I'm not very happy with this at all and will be returning it. The instruction manual even seems to be incomplete. I read one section that refers to a "figure below" and there is no figure, just blank white paper. I wouldn't recommend purchasing this, but maybe you'll have better luck than I did.
I tried to checkout the eBay reviews, but the seller has like over 1 million feedbacks....... For what it's worth, I went through a couple negative feedback pages and didn't see anything Dreamcast related.

Yeah, I saw that same review.

VGA -> Component seems to be another option instead of VGA -> HDMI. Is one generally regarded as better than the other for the Dreamcast?

Sorry for so many questions. I'm very lost with Dreamcast VGA and sincerely appreciate all of the shared experience. :D

Yea, I am not really sure about this....

I would think VGA to Component would be a better option because it is converting analog to another analog signal opposed to converting to a digital signal (HDMI).

Personally, I would go with HDMI because that is the input many people use today. So if you ever buy a TV in the future, you will have an HDMI slot. I've been seeing TVs in the USA with 1 component input at most now.

I've ultimately decided to go with the HDMI one. For some of the reasons you cited, as well as some quite good information here:

Hey guys,
New member around these parts. I tend to lurk until I have questions that I may need expertise on. I've enjoyed Racketboy for many years and have discovered many things through the site. Anyway, I have a very late model CRT manufactured in 2005. It sports 2 component inputs and something almost unheard of on a CRT: an HDMI port. I want to pick up a Dreamcast VGA cable and convert that for use with either the component or HDMI input. My question is this, since most converter boxes have been made with hdmi TVs in mind, are there any models I can be assured would be compatible with a CRT TV?

I don't know if this information may be useful, but the TV does natively display 4:3 and has a pulldown widescreen function, and it does support 480p as well as 720p.
