Dangun is one of the few shmups where just getting on the board is damn tough.

I can't stand Uo Poko though.

Finally got my Japanese PS store Yen card so I bought DoDonPachi and Einhander. DoDonPachi plays like Ketsui, but much easier (still hard as hell). Einhander was more fun that I thought it would be. I didn't get to play that one much, but I liked the fact that you could pick up weapons from ships you destroyed.

Please elaborate on the comparison of DoDonPachi to Ketsui?

^Yeah...I guess. Both are CAVE and bullet-hell, but the similarities end there for me. The scoring and chaining is done in a considerably different manner. DDP has a lot more enemies, but are much more easily killed, whereas Ketsui has a focus on many large stationary enemies. Mid-boss fights are much more difficult to chain through in Ketsui and last longer / more difficult in general. Ketsui has mostly bright backdrops / DDP mostly dark.

When I play DDP, I find myself hanging back, trying to extend chains through slow sections, whereas Ketsui lends itself to a much more aggressive style of play, constantly being up on enemies before they can unleash mass bullets.

I think that, if Ketsui were any more similar to Dodonpachi, it would have to have "Dodonpachi" in the title.

They are similar in that I suck at both games

No, I guess I meant "similar" in the sense that they are both CAVE games (like you mentioned) and the art style/direction (military) is the same. The scoring system is way different, and like you also said, there is a different strategy to gameplay.

I noticed on DoDonPachi that I can press L1 and it slows down time a bit. I didn't even try this on Ketsui...is this even possible?

That's only on the PS1 port. It makes the game a lot easier (and also more boring, since it's moving about half speed). Not sure why they added it to that version.
