DIY controller adapters?

Post by fastbilly1 »

I am in need of two PSX to Saturn controller adapters (that is female PSX/PS2 and male Saturn). Since Tototek's adapter has been off the market for a couple years and the second hand ones are going for $40-100 depending on where they are sold, I was wondering if anyone has found a way to do it themselves. Be it a by a PCB and donor parts, or by a string of adapters. In searching quite a bit the main thing I found is FGW, but that requires more technical know how than I have to make it work properly.

My goal is to adapt one of my Saturns so I can use it with Viletims JAMMA adapter with PS2 attachment. That way I do not have to buy an STV for Bakubaku and Dynamite Deka.

If you only want to use a digital controller (no analog buttons or directionals), it should be possible to bypass the logic circuits on the PS1/2 controller you're planning to use and simply wire the button switches directly to the pad contacts on a donor Saturn digital controller.

I'm pretty sure both PS1/2 and Saturn use a bus-type data interface. I know several people have documented the protocol they both use (Ulao even figured out the analog protocol of Saturn 3D pads years ago). Still without gutting/bypassing the logic chip on the PS2 controller, you'd need a custom interface chip to decode and then re-encode the signal going to the Saturn:

Sounds too technical for me...

s8n, you are the reason I was looking into the Viletim adapter. Your Retroarch Wii in an Astrocity, is the reason I started looking into getting one, then when I discovered my monitor wont support Tatsunoko vs Capcom, that sealed the deal. I just view the Astro City as the ultimate Saturn case (since they were what was standard for Sega when the Saturn games were showcased) and would love to have one of my Saturns in there aswell.

Ill look into those pad hacks, I have a spare 15 or so 3rd party Saturn controllers anyway.

I was told by several others it would not run on a 15k, only a 31k, including a guy I almost bought it from. I have a standard Nanao MS8, so if it will run on that, well I live with the Wii version for a while and upgrade to the PCB later.

i can definitely vouch and prove that Tatsunoko running on a WII through RGB Scart cable to viletims adapter works.

below are a couple of pics i took about a year ago or more............

viletims adapter is designed to run in 15k resolutions through a Scart cable , so anything Scart will work.

i use PS1 , PS2 , Dreamcast , Sega Saturn , Neo Geo CD , Xbox 360 , Gamecube and WII

Point Blank on PS1 with Guncons is fantastic fun , to setup is easy and costs very little

Ah you misunderstood, I meant the PCB for Tatsunoko vs Capcom. I know the Wii version runs well on it.

Its cool. Since I have a 2l6B Astro, I figure it is the best option for a fighting game (it doesnt hurt that it is one of my favorite fighters).

The goal is to have a Wii, Saturn, and, Dreamcast that are all mounted so I can just slot them in with the Viletim adapter, as well as my PGM, MVS, and other PCBs. I just do not want to spend so much on a ST-V or Naomi for two or three games, when I already own them on the Saturn or Dreamcast (specifically games like Baku Baku, Radiant Silvergun, VF1-3, Dynamite Deka 1&2, Powerstone, and the bevy of shooters on each console).
