I think equating this to how Sony handled PS2 support on PS3 is not accurate. (Where they did indeed hold back PS2 compatibility through emulation and then proceeded to do PSN releases and HD remakes.)
Honestly, as cheap as these video cards are getting (and with Steam machines that could run Dolphin in 1080p out of the box coming soon), I don't know that it's worth trying to get Dolphin running on the Wii U anyway. It MIGHT be possible in theory, but since it uses a modified FreeBSD you would either have to reverse engineer all the propietary stuff including the AMD driver (which is never going to happen), or port Linux to it like with the Wii (possible, but would void your warranty and probably not be worth the hassle). You can get a GTX 660 for $200 easy right now, and they will probably do a price drop before long given its age. It's more than enough to get every last pixel with Dolphin for me anyway, and there are Linux drivers for the PS3, 360 and Wii controllers already.
I'd just be really curious to see what games feel like with a normal controller. My friend said it was hilarious playing Mario Galaxy with a 360 controller, because the second stick controlled the Wiimote pointer and it felt completely natural or even better. lol

Yep. It's cheaper (and more convenient) to emulate it yourself than to try to get it running on that hardware or waiting for Nintendo to do it (because they aren't going to). Maybe next system will have Wii on VC.

I couldn't tell you, I never actually owned a Wii. I found out my DVD drive would play the discs and downloaded Dolphin so I could play Xenoblade, which I beat entirely with a PS3 controller. I've been working through some of the Wii catalogue recently though, but I still don't own a Wiimote, the only thing I can say is that Dolphin works great with the Sixaxis and my USB Saturn controller (under Linux anyway). I went through a phase where I was pretty much out of gaming for awhile after Sony burned me with the PS3, the only thing that got me back in was a new Xeno (well, sort of) game for the Wii. I did play a few Wii games with friends, but mostly just the sports stuff, not enough to tell you how well the Sixaxis or 360 controller compare to games designed for the Wiimote.
I want Retro to do another Metroid more than anything, but I'd love for them to do one more Donkey Kong to have their own collective trilogy. With the third, they can finally bring back the Kremlins and K Rool. That and they should package in the game with the original Returns, remastered in HD.
I also believe Nintendo expanded the studio, so it might be possible they're working on more than one title at a time.
But they already did three Metroid games over a 7 year period. (Technically 8 or 9 considering the re-vamped content in Prime Trilogy) If they do more Donkey Kong, it'd have to be something really innovative, I think.
Wouldn't it be neat if they did something original, or re-interpreted another neglected franchise. F-Zero, Star Fox, Wario-Adventure ... there's stuff that hasn't been touched in a long time and may need updating and adapting.

Honestly, I'm not a big fan of Retro for some reason. I liked the Metroid Prime games. I think DKCR is good, but not a patch on the original games. I think the new DK games are completely lacking in the charm of the old ones. They kinda remind me of WayForward, another company everyone loves who I think are just good, not great.
It does make me worry about what other license they may use though. The persistent rumours of Starfox worry me a bit. On the other hand, I reckon they could pull off a great F-Zero. Id rather Sega made a new one though
I think a Mario Kart 8 bundle with a Wii Remote would sell quite well. Drop the gamepad to lower the price and include one of those plastic wheels from MK Wii.

I am sorry, but that idea is absolutely insane on an almost infinite number of levels. That would be a similar idea as releasing 3DS version of Mario Kart without a touchscreen. You would be providing the customer with a product that does not work with almost every other game on the system.
The gamepad is required on a lot of titles for the system; quality titles that provide a lot of entertainment. Getting a gamepad after the fact is difficult to do, having to scour Ebay for your needs as it is not something you can order directly from Nintendo. This would require Nintendo to rework their operating system to accommodate that as features like the WiiTV, eShop, Video Chat would be useless. The gamepad is the only reason to purchase the system, as it is the defining facet of the system that makes it stand out from its competition.

And yet it's been horribly under-utilized. If I was even going to consider buying a Wii-U (which I'm not) the gamepad wouldn't factor into my decision at all, simply because it's not being put to effective or interesting use yet.
