Need help repairing a 32X.

Post by PyramidHeadcrab »

Hi there,

I got a 32X this week, but it doesn't seem to work at all. Before I continue, I will note that I do have technical skills - I'm totally willing to solder all new parts to the board if needed.

So here's the story. The thing doesn't power up or register at all. The Genesis it's connected to is in immaculate condition. When I put a game in the 32X and start the system up, nothing happens at all. I opened up the system and cleaned it up - a lot of the steel on the console is rusted, and it had a good collection of hair and mould inside. But nothing looks melted or exploded, so it should still be fine. I detached the infamous white flat cables and cleaned the contacts on the cables and in the connectors. Still nothing.

I guess what I'm looking for is some less-common issues with the system, and maybe some tips on how I can diagnose this thing. Even though there's only four games I want for it, I got the thing for free, and I love the feeling of restored electronics.

Thanks in advance for any tips and advice.

You got the plug and socket contacts well cleaned too? No janku looking capacitors? Just for curiosity's sake, will it run a regular Genesis game with the 32X in place?

I have not cleaned the contacts at the back, but I will try that. Normal Genesis games don't work at all, and I don't have any 32X games to test.

Ah ok, thought you were trying with a 32X game. Not sure what else besides that other clean, bad caps, or checking for any cold solder problems.
