Nintendo DS is Peer to Peer or Server Based with Online Play

Post by casterofdreams »

Bit of an odd ball question, is the Nintendo DS "Internet/Infrastructural/Nintendo Wifi Connection" a Peer to Peer service or does it have servers that will shut down in X number of years?

So if I want to battle someone in Pokemon over Wifi for example, I can do so any time long after when the Ds becomes "retro"?

As far as I can tell it is at least partially server-based. There is definitely a centralized server that handles things such as matchmaking and standings but individual games might then be hosted client-side. But yes, you do have to worry about servers shutting down in X years and not being able to do anything but local multiplayer.

I HATE the fact this is something that we need to care about with modern games.

Sort of. All of Nintendo's stuff works just fine in local multiplayer too, so it's hardly different to before we had to care about it :?

Are there any games on either Wii or DS that require the online component?

None that I'm aware of. Only online services in games will be affected. Local multiplayer like Pokemon will still work but you need to be close to the person.

My concern when I started this topic was basically if a pokemon trade or battle over Wifi needed to talk to a server during the exchange or does just connect to the unit piping through a Wifi connection.

In any event it doesn't matter. My interest have shifted from that point.

For a minute I thought VC was going to be dropped from the Wii. I suppose that won't happen though due to Wii mode on the Wii U. At least not for a while.
