It is very good, not the best of all time for sure.

It's quite difficult as well, I have a hard time getting far in it.

You need to get the hang of it......It challenges a plethora of gaming skills, not merely reflexes or the ability to forcefully pound the keyboard

Yes, its a ROM. I vaguely recall it reaching a console at some point, but I'll always remember it as an Amiga game.

If you are on XP, i would recommend you to get DOSBOX

You can also get genesis/snes ports of this game from any standard rom site (romhustler)
