Random Thoughts Thread

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I'm really starting to hate animated gif images. You can't browse a forum without twenty different anime images in peoples' signatures. Heck, you can't visit kotaku at all without loading the damn things.

Used my state tax return to buy a laptop. Nothing fancy. I just need something for the internet, schoolwork, etc. I can use my desktop for anything more intensive (PC gaming or whatever).

So I turn on the computer and holy shit.

My first experience with Windows 8.

Are you fucking serious.

Look, I know it's cool to rag on Windows in general but I've never had an issue with it. Except for ME, which I had on my college PC. That was fairly shitty. But damn does Windows 8 make ME look like a masterpiece of software design. I'm fairly good with computers (studying Information Systems in college right now) but this shit is confusing as hell. It's so convoluted and messy and just plain awful. I feel like I'm being trolled by Microsoft.

You just wait. I have had so many problems with the OS that required me to go and do a few changes here and there to get things to work right. Such things as, deleting copy/paste/moving/renaming files not taking hold. The computer taking 20 minutes to open folders. Tons of non-virus related issues that it has driven me insane.

@Opa Opa

I am not technical, but animated gifs have been around since at least '98 (remember the long loading java image that made a picture look like its reflected on a lake?) and since then computers have been 1000X faster but gifs are still take a lot of time to load I just don't understand this.

Any way, many forums have rules about animated gif and even static banners and profile pictures should be in specific sizes.

Animated gifs have been around since I presume 1989 (definitely early 90s at least) since they were added with the GIF89a specification. The thing is, gifs are terrible at efficiently storing animation, even though they're limited to 256 colors. For instance, the short animated gifs here are a little over 25 megs total. That is for 256 color low quality moving pictures that total about 25 seconds. The full linked video at 720 (about double the dimensions for 4 times the data area) on Youtube with music is 106 megs if saved for over 5 1/2 minutes of higher quality video with music.

Gifs don't require a video player and any browser can show them, but they're horribly inefficient for complex moving images.

I love GIFs because my girlfriend sends me tons of them involving cute cat things while she's at work, and they make me happy. :D
