Could you elaborate about the problems? I will soon be buying my friend's PS3 that is the model prior to the top loading ones, although I wish I could get the top loading models I like that, but I will be buying my friends at maybe $116 along with maybe 15-20 Triple A games. Had to let that offer slipForlorn Drifter wrote:Another revision might come, but I imagine we're at the final point for models on PS3. Pretty much all of the problems were bucked with the last one, although they may go for a more economical model in the future with a bit updated technology and smaller size, although I doubt it.RCBH928 wrote:will there be a newer model for the ps3 or the latest slim is the final thing? PS3 lives on....

For my money, most of the issues the original PS3s had were resolved with the Slim, though they progressively cut features as well (the model comparison on Wikipedia illustrates that).RCBH928 wrote: Could you elaborate about the problems?
Original to Slim gives you a noticeably cooler and in turn quieter console, and proper Bitstreaming support for lossless audio. On a more subjective note, the design is a lot more subdued (matte finish, lack of chrome accents, no Spider-Man font, etc) and has actual buttons instead of the touch surfaces for power and eject.
AFAIK, the Super-Slim is even cooler and quieter, but the top-loading had mixed response.

The Super-slim ... apparently ... is very loud, due to the disk drive. At least that's what my friend claimed.
The Slim also added CEC support. Which you can't use with the original model.
There could always be another mode. They did, after all, release a short lived PSP-4000 that removed WiFi and some other features.

Re: PS3 lives on....
I have a super slim and I would say it's the quietest console I have ever owned. The only sound from the bd drive is a sort of whooshing noise. It runs very cool as well, especially in comparison to my Xbox360S which emits as much heat as a nuclear power plant!

Re: PS3 lives on....
I have the Super Slim and it is so noisy because of the disc drive. I don't have the one prior so I can't compare but I do have the first release of the Xbox 360S (after this there was an internal component revision and then a full revision that made it look like the Xbox One) and it it quiet. This is due to the ability to fully install the game to the hard drive. PS3 doesn't allow this why I don't know. The first minute or so that the Xbox disc drive spins on game start up when installed isn't too bad, a constant humming typical to PC drives.Cronozilla wrote:The Super-slim ... apparently ... is very loud, due to the disk drive. I think the PSP-4000 was a code designation for a revision that was never released. The one with the stripped features was the PSP-e1000 and I believe that was a Europe and Japan exclusive.
Re: PS3 lives on....
IDK, my Super Slim seems pretty quiet to me. Of course, I've probably got hearing damage from years of loud live music and no earplugs like a dumbass, so take that FWIW. I really like the top-loading aspect, and the ridges look cool (but attract dust like a mofo).
Re: PS3 lives on....
The sweet spot is the Slim that was released in 2009-2010 imo, its quiet, not glossy, and doesnt feel cheap like the Super Slim.
Also, the Super Slim has that top loading obviously that will probably last longer than a slot loading like the Slim.
The only downside to the Slim is maybe the HDD size if you would rather have a 500gb like they have in Super Slims, and no BC for PS2 games like with launch PS3's.
But with the Slim the HDD is easily replaceable.

I must be really lucky then as mine is very quiet. Got mine for Christmas so perhaps they have revised it ?casterofdreams wrote:I have the Super Slim and it is so noisy because of the disc drive. In comparison, I have to install all games to the hard drive of my 360, it makes so much noise when the drive is spinning, sounds like it is broken, I can hear it even with my headphones on...!
As for the PS3 not installing games to the hard drive, it kinda does, if you play a disc based game, notice how the hard drive activity light is mostly on, and generally when the disc is being accessed. My guess is a combination of both..
Re: PS3 lives on....
I believe in the CNET super-slim review, they said the super slim was only slightly louder than the previous model.
Out of topic, but best console redesign is probably the ps2 slim. Huge size factor, infact it must be the thinnest consoles I have ever seen, released 5 years after the initial ps2 launch. PS3 has been on the market for 7 years and the size difference between ps3->super slim no where near ps2->slim

Re: PS3 lives on....
I'd actually argue the PS2 slim isn't the best thing out there. The thing is incredibly flimsy and because the CD tray basically has a paper flap holding it together, it's really easy for dust to build up in there without even using it. I've had to clean the inside and the wipe the lens a few times with mine.
