Question To collectors with kids

Post by Toktogul »

Hi,
I'm about to become a dad, and a thought hit me. Kids are touchy little things, and i got scare that i could get my collection/consoles ruin by puke or mistreatement from my future daughter.

What are the ways you used to make sure your collection is safe? how did you sensibilise your kid to take care of video games? What age did you let them play games? what age could they play without being supervised?

thanks

Babies will be all over your stuff!

If you let them have access to it...........

My daughter doesn't enter my game room. Problem solved. 8)

I'll let her play Genesis or Atari 2600 when she's old enough. Those controllers are like tanks. No reason for her to actually touch any cartridges or discs though. At least not for a long time.

my game room doesnt have a lock on it ;( it will take a few years but soon she will be able to go to the sacred room by herself and i'm scared of the damage hahah. also yea, good idea on megadrive and atari, those are
truely kid resistant hahah.

also i plan to have newer gen in the living room ... hide the wii u, ps3 and xbox360 high up along with the games?

There are a variety of things you could do.

1. Store excess stuff when not using it in a location that they can't get to.
2. Get a locked door for your game room or a nice shelf with locking doors.
3. Build up a supply of consoles to teach her on and give her own collection(if she likes gaming that is). My suggestion would be plug n plays to start and then move onwards to newer consoles or clone machines which can easily be replaced if something were to happen.

You will have a few years to get the hang of things before she turns into a cat burglar and starts opening doors and climbing things  . Just be prepared for stuff to get broken though it will happen regardless of how careful you are. Just try to keep your cool when the inevitable happens.

Another suggestion be careful about wiring if your game room I know in my case the area behind my tv could be a death trap for any adventuring toddler :P.

hahaha thanks for the suggestion. yea ill buy power bars with protection and also make sure to have a switch on off for the entirety of the consoles supply.

i dont like to hide stuff in box since its a collection, i want to be able to see it as a whole ;) maybe locked shelf is the option for rarer stuff. i guess ill also buy those universal game cases. can japanese megadrive/super famicom /famicom fit in those?

With my set up it is tough. Had to get easy to break or crush or crease things up high. Also just have to watch her. She likes turning on and off systems if she can and can somehow open all the disc trays.

One of my collector editions had some light crushing creasing.

Last week she ejected Ogre Battle from my PS3 and was holding the disc in the air. Luckily, I got it from her before she could scratch it.

Put the fear of God in them. Simple enough

(Why, yes, my kid is only three months and doesn't walk yet. Why are you calling me naive?)
