Word of caution, I've heard that the sequel doesn't hold a candle to the original and isn't really worth watching. That said, I haven't actually seen it myself, so if you do decide to watch it I'd be interested to hear what your thoughts are.

I have also read that the sequel only tarnishes the original, and I would not watch it. I think you would be better off reading up on Donnie Darko a bit and re-watching it.

I didn't understand Darko either, I hate movies that is supposed to make you think and wonder and try to over analyse it, I like to watch a movie that is just pure entertainment like The Matrix.

Was that sarcasm? Because while the Matrix is certainly entertaining and visually amazing, it's one of my all time favorites because of the fact that it also makes me think, wonder, and over analyze it :P

S Darko is terrible, do not watch it. Don't watch the directors cut of Donnie either.

The original film is all that is needed. If you ever get the urge for more Darko, just watch it again.

With the Matrix you CAN overanalyze it, but you can also sit back and enjoy the ride.

I suppose that's true. You can just soak in all the bullet-time effects and the ridiculous kung-fu fights / shootouts. I'm certainly guilty of that for more than one viewing.

This week I watched the US remake of Oldboy and You're Next.

First off, the Korean Oldboy is in my Top 5 list of best movies in the history of ever. So, I knew going in that I wouldn't like the remake. However, there have been remakes of movies in the past that I enjoyed just as much as the original. But, just by watching the trailer I knew things were getting changed unnecessarily. With that said, I will add that they kept some of the cool things about the movie and tried to mimic the original while also Americanizing it and adding their own style.

My biggest gripe all around with the remake was that it didn't have the same feeling as the original. On paper the formula was correct, they had all the right parts in the right place. But, the new one had no soul. However, I would still recommend watching it to someone that has nothing to compare it to. In that instance it could probably be of some merit for someone. But, for those of us that have the original to compare it to, the remake was boring and unnecessary. 3/5 (for the uninitiated); 1/5 (for those that have seen the original).

As for "You're Next"... This is a movie about a family that has gathered in their mansion for a small family reunion of sorts when suddenly a group of murderers start attacking them. But, they don't count on one of the members fighting back. That about sums it up. There are a couple twists, but they are all predictable. It was entertaining enough for a single viewing but I never care to see it again. 3/5.

Like yourself, I hold the original Oldboy in very high regard. I don't think I could ever bring myself to watch the remake.

Watched Captain Phillips last night with the fiance. Overall it was a pretty good film and It was interesting watching something and knowing the beginning and end, then watching the middle unfold. It was a little frustrating watching it with her because she was oblivious to this when it occurred, but it was awesome seeing how perfect the rescue op had to be.
