While MrPopo was obviously trolling, I would say that the inverse of this is true. If I was stuck on a deserted island and only allowed Nintendo games or Sega games, I'd go with Sega.

He was? None of Sega's recent stuff, even when it's been good, has been anywhere near as good as their heyday.

Seriously. Sega was a giant in the late 80's/early 90's. And while the statement "Sega was inferior to Nintendo at the top of their game" may be subjective, Sega has certainly taken a fall since the good ol' days. I'd put Sega at the same level Konami was at in the Genesis/SuperNES time period. Not a huge company, but *certainly* not a failure of one.

Don't feed the trolls! Anyway, I'm with you on that. Before the Saturn hit, it was very much a toss up as to who was dominant. Especially in the Sega CD era, Nintendo had the perception of being a kiddie console even that early, but once the PSX hit and Sega botched the Saturn launch and marketing on the heels of the disastrous 32x, that was all she wrote. 20 years later and I'm still mad at Bernie Stolar, why Sega thought hiring the guy Sony canned (and who masterminded the Atari Lynx before that) I'll never know.

I think much more damaging than the 32X was dropping support for the Genesis early when it was still performing fine. There was no need for a "stop gap" when they could have just continued supporting the Genesis until the Saturn was ready. Instead they just handed the market over to Nintendo for the remainder of the generation. A lot of that was Sega of Japan's fault, since the console never really did will in Japan and they hardly gave a damn about the western market despite Sega of America's protests in favor of the popularity of the Genesis.

Yeah the 32X and the poor handling of the Saturn was a disaster but I feel like the premature exit of the Genesis was their most damning move. At the climax of the 16-bit console war in the west, Sega threw in the towel for no apparent reason except that they had lost the war in the homeland.

You are right about that, now that I think about it. I was just speaking from my perspective as a kid back then, of course I had no idea that the Turbografx/PC-Engine existed, let alone that it was beating the Genesis in Japan. So to me, when they killed the Genesis and the Sega CD, I just said "Huh? And what is this supid thing they want me to stick on my Genesis now?" I remember even back then, the Sega CD was a hot item with kids that you would brag about having even if not that many people had one because of the price (I mowed lawns to buy mine used from a pawn shop  ). 32x should have never existed, the CD add on was more than enough to act as a stop gap and actually had some truly great games, and the fact that it existed at all highlights the disconnect between SoA and SoJ; why make ANOTHER add on for a console that the home office wants to dump in the first place?

Problem the 64 has is that a lot of its "great" games have not aged well at all(Goldeneye is a prime example) where as a large portion of the Saturn library has. At the time the 64 vs Saturn argument would have definitely swung towards the 64. I know I wanted one over a Saturn. Where as looking back now, I think most gamers(nostalgia excluded) would choose a Saturn.
Saturn had a handful of great games but N64 had two handfulls. Unless you like space shooters and 2d fighters, I don't see how anyone would pick the N64 only out of nostalgia.

First thing that needs to happen is for M$ to exit the console business
