PVM Dilemma

Post by jei »

Hello, new member here just signed up.

I have an opportunity to get a 1944Q for free or at least super cheap depending on my talks with the owner. But there is a slight problem with it. Basically when you turn it on, the screen is in reddish color at first. But after a warm up for like 5 minutes or so, it returns to its normal, colored state. I haven't got a chance to talk to someone who knows about this, and the owner doesn't want to be bothered with it.

Now before I pull the trigger on the deal, just want to ask since I'm no expert on TVs. Would it be an easy fix? If it's an easy fix, I'm willing to do it myself.

Any inputs would be appreciated. Thanks

Looks like this kid's got a similar problem:

Judging by the comments, doesn't exactly sound like an "easy" fix...
Looks like the red cathode is shorted to filament making it emit full blast. First interchange the connections for the red and green cathodes (for example), if you still get a full red raster then the cathode is shorted. There are ways to salvage the tube which involve isolating the filament supply and trying to 'blow out' the short with high voltage or a charged capacitor.
Good luck and be safe! :)

I would argue if it's free, just get it! Worst case scenario you toss it or give it to someone else. After all, you said after it warms up for a couple minutes it works fine, so it could always be worse.

Hey everyone, thanks for the reply. Sorry I haven't got the time to check this thread.

@EllertMichael

Saw the video and it is kinda like that. And after reading the comment it does sounds like hard to fix.

@KalessinDB

Yeah if it's free I would have gotten it. But that is not the case anymore. I'd probably get it in the future if it's still available and if I have more knowledge on how to fix the problem.

I using a 29" LG CRT now so the PVMs can take a backseat for the meantime. Although the quality of the LG is not that impressive.

Thanks again everyone :)

Well you said:

"But after a warm up for like 5 minutes or so, it returns to its normal, colored state."

That's a small price to pay for a free TV if you will log hours of gaming onto a PVM.

My TV has a similar issue. Right when I turn it on, it has a yellowish tint and is quite dark. After about two-five minutes, it is nice and bright and colorful. It has been like this for several years now and this particular issue has not gotten any worse.

@sp957

Hey thanks for the reply.

Actuallg the deal got sour real fast. Owner decided to not sell anymore. Instead I found a japan release only, a Sony Trinitron KV-14DA1. Has a D1 Terminal inputs and the multi AV inputs specific for Playstation.

Again, thanks for all the replies. Might post my actual setup on the Game Theater forums sometime.
