All fightings games do this not just Super Smash. IIRC Tekken, Mortal Kombat, and Street Fighter all do this .
Well in a crossover game, it is important to advertise who will be in it.

It's not really surprising. Character selection is one of the biggest features a fighting game can have.

They have had a buildup for every new character reveal in the new Smash Bros. It all really started with Snake and rightfully so. It was something no one expected and announced that third party characters would be featured. Now, it is just fun. It isn't a system seller. No one is going to say, "Oh man Little Mac is in this!? SIGN ME DA FUQ UP!"

What it does do is poke fun at itself and just have fun with it, an experience that carries over to we the consumer. It is funny and entertaining to watch. That's all.

Also...when did Street Fighter do this? Curious to know, because I do not remember them doing a video to reveal that characters like Hakan were going to be in the game. They may have done so in a trailer for the upcoming street fighter game, because a roster can drum up excitement.

Although it might be worth buying a copy for potential flipping purposes if they make a low print run like Xenoblade.
I have to say, I'm pretty excited about it and it's the main reason I bought a Wii U, but to each his own.

Also, on an unrelated note, I am making my way through Wind Waker HD and loving it. I know it's old news to you guys that were already onboard, but this game already makes me feel satisfied with the purchase.
I was very surprised at the little improvements and how they had a massive impact on how good Windwaker HD really was. The pad motion controls make targeting with the grappling hook, using the camera and using the bow so much easier. Also, the ability to move while shooting your bow and arrow in first person view is such an insane idea for some reason...and it works wonderfully!
I'm definitely with you on that, after getting my hands on this controller and seeing how well this game integrates it, I've got to believe a lof of the people attacking it just don't like Nintendo or are trolling. This is probably my favorite controller since the Dreamcast with its VMU, obviously I'd still take the Saturn controller for a 2D fighter/Virtual Console stuff, but it's cool to see someone actually being innovative.

Uh ... yeah ... right, no one would do that ... ever, especially not I. That's exactly what I didn't do.

@BogusMeatFactory

I meant in general, fighting games always make a fuss about some sort of a character in their roster. I really couldn't care less if there was a secret fighting Panda in Street Fighter or a Luigi in Tekken for Wii U . Sometimes its worse, they advertise attire like its a big deal, you have to unlock costumes...

As for the Wii U controller, I really like the idea (Just like I liked the Wiimote) except there is no games that take advantage of it. I do not want any one to tell me shooting ninja stars is a good way to utilise this, or I can draw circles on the screen to add a slight boost to my kart in Mario Kart. It will be awesome to use it like a spy gadget to communicate with "contacts" or maybe if you can hold it up in front of the screen you can use it like a night-vision camera in dark areas. It is surprisingly light too. Does the Wii U tablet accept finger touch it must be via the stylus ?

It's not like every character in other fighting games has their own game. Practically every character in Smash Bros is an iconic mascot on their own. It's a different approach.

ZombiU has a map, utilizes a first person scanner that you look around with and scan. Uses it for sniper rifles and the speakers use the pad as a personal communication system, not mention the inventory management, hacking and lockpicking, all the while having a different view on the main screen to keep your eye out for zombies.

Splinter Cell: blacklist has gamepad controlled gadgets.

Windwaker HD, uses the gamepad for motion controlled archery, camera use and grappling hook. What makes it better is that you can also move while in that first person mode, creating a very awesome FPS experience.

Pikmin 3 allows you to use the camera in first person view to take pictures, but also allows you to issue commands, view them and alter them on the pad.

Nintendo Land uses the pad in a variety of ways. Donkey Kong's Crash Course is a great example of this. It uses the motion controls, the microphone and is incredibly intuitive to play. Play the Metroid mini-game and control the ship. If you sit in a spinning chair, it gives you a full 360 movement capability that is unbelievably enjoyable to use.
