My review, my GOTY pick. It's been awhile since I played a game that instantly hooked me like Sub Wars.dsheinem wrote:Jeez, it's only February.Flake wrote: what I think may already be my Game of the Year.
Do you do much non-Nintendo-based contemporary gaming? I just feel like it's been a long time for a game on a Nintendo platform to do something that strikes me as "GOTY" quality, even if they sometimes have interesting hooks...

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

That's fine - I'm just trying to understand what you look for in a GOTY and how widely you generally look.Flake wrote:My review, my GOTY pick. My GOTY pick is whatever new game I enjoyed the most over the course of the year. I don't make any particular effort to explore the wide spectrum of all games available. I've neither the time, money, or inclination as in the end, the only person who cares what game I enjoyed the most in a given year is me.
Back on topic: Fun fact I left out of the review. There's a strong chance that Steel Diver Sub Wars takes place in the Star Fox Universe. I'd very much like that to be true.

If so....mind blown. That would be really cool if they honestly made a Star Fox universe game that incorporated all the aspects of the previous titles like land sea and air in an all out persistent on-line world.Flake wrote:My GOTY pick is whatever new game I enjoyed the most over the course of the year. I agree with this for sure. I don't get to play every game I want to each year. But I am curious are you saying that Steel Diver is your GOTY from 1/1 to today, or are you estimating that no game will come out for the rest of 2014 that you will enjoy more?Flake wrote:My GOTY pick is whatever new game I enjoyed the most over the course of the year.

There's no way I'd ever pick this as an overall 2014 GOTY contender- especially considering it's only February.
It might be a strong choice for best free-to-play title of 2014. Although there will be a lot of competition in that category; especially from iOS/Android releases.

There are a few games I am anticipating this year such as Mario Kart 8 or Donkey Kong Country Tropic Freeze. Word is Baldur's Gate will finally be appearing on my android tablet this year, too.noiseredux wrote:I agree with this for sure. I don't get to play every game I want to each year. I think I'll like plenty of games that are yet to come out, but I'll be surprised if any grab me as strong as this one has. It's an amazing game, it's a fresh restart of a new Nintendo IP, and it's a got a competent online component, something I can really dig with my new 3DSXL.

Super Mario 3D World was GOTY quality for sure.dsheinem wrote:Jeez, it's only February.Flake wrote: what I think may already be my Game of the Year.

As for Steel Diver, I played a few rounds, while fun it is not really hooking me in. I just find it a shooter in which you can also control the pitch freely. Need to try it out a bit.
Is this the first Nintendo made game that the online included the ability to chat freely in a lobby, rather than sentences from a phrase book? I feel like Nintendo might remove this feature in the future.
