I mentioned this in the RPG subforum, but now that I've finished Ogre Battle(and Super Turrican 2), I'm now playing Brain Lord. So far, it's been a lot of fun!

Yoshi's Island hasn't really clicked with me yet. Not sure if it will.

I love how quick and breezy most 2D Mario games are. This one is very gimmicky and it feels like I have to learn a new mechanic every level (though I admit I am still in World 1). I plan to see the game through, though I certainly can't foresee it becoming a favorite of mine.

Stick with it, I guarantee you'll like it.

I loved the score system and how it made you visit every last part of each stage. I've 100%ed the whole thing on SNES -- SMA3 is about 75-80% complete.

OMG, its one of my favorite Mario games ever, how can you defy its awesomeness!

The music is probably the best part.

It took me a few levels to really get the hang of the core mechanics but once I did, I really ended up liking the gameplay a lot. Hell I even went back to a few prior levels after getting really far just to get the 100% score in those levels. Really a lot of fun, but also some frustration too. After roughly 6 days of playing, I'm at level 6-7, so I'm close to the end thus far.

Oddly enough, your view of Yoshi's Island is almost how I feel about Kirby's Dream Land 3. I don't hate it. Hell, I actually like almost everything about it, except the controls. The controls made playing KDL3 feel like such a chore at times. And why does Kirby walk SO FUCKING SLOW?!?!?!?! Jeez, I could move faster walking throughout my house with my eyes closed. Ugh. At least you get the option to run in that game, because that's what I did about 80% of the time. It sucks because I love everything else about the game. I dig the graphics style, the music is good, I like the inclusion of the animal buddies, I even like the unlockables (except for the minigames, I don't like those). But those controls.....man they make the game feel slower than it should. At least Yoshi's Island has good controls...

I played through it last year. Not bad at all. Some good action, lots of weapons. Liked the use of the fairies as your sidekicks (my favorite is the one that shoots fireballs). Not sure how far you are at this point but do expect some brain teasers when you go through the dungeons. One of them involved me doing a type of math problem I hadn't done in probably a good decade or two.

So I cranked through Mega Man X tonight for the first time in ages, inspired by the earlier discussion in this thread. I've always maintained that X2 was better and that X was just pretty good... but I'm starting to re-think that.

My two main criticisms in the past were:

1, too easy, especially for a MM game. And I still think that's true. It's the same thing as Super Mario World, where you can sleepwalk backwards through the game and still accumulate tons of extra lives. I had 7 lives after completing just 3 levels. But, maybe that's not such a bad thing. SMW is a good comparison for MMX, because they're both games you can blow through pretty quickly (I beat the game in just under 2 hours, getting all the upgrades, subtanks and heart containers minus one, didn't bother getting the Boomer Kwanger one) and have a blast doing it.

2, some of the weapons are over-powered like crazy, like Storm Tornado and charged Rolling Shield. This one still bugs me. I had to disqualify myself from using the charged Rolling Shield just to make it a bit more fun.

I'd also forgotten a lot of the clever touches the game has -- the inter-related levels for instance, when you beat Storm Eagle and it screws up the electricity in Spark Mandrill's level for whatever reason. Big picture stuff like that is a really cool touch.

Anyway, I'm going to plow through MMX2 tomorrow to see if I still like it better.

It's cause you crashed the airship into Spark Mandrill's stage; you can see some of the pieces at the beginning. Some of the other changes make less sense; beating Chill Penguin ices down Flame Mammoth's stage (I get the ice part, but what about killing Chill Penguin got ice in the factory?) and beating Launch Octopus gets some water in Sting Chameleon's stage (this one iirc is only so you can get the heart tank, and again I'm not sure why killing Octopus got some water in the stage).

That's cool. Where is that explained? I don't think it's in the instruction book

It's not explained anywhere, as far as I know. You just pick it up through stage clues.

Oh, maybe I was just tone deaf when it came to noticing that.
