DOS Gaming when PC gaming was truely Unique
DOS Gaming when PC gaming was truely Unique
I'm not a PC gamer maybe it's the atitude of a small minority of PC gamers but I just don't like gaming on PC. HOWEVER Dos gaming was my shit. Tracking Carmen across the world and the US,
Mavis Beacon Teaching me typing, ALl the really bad Shareware games that have maybe 1 good game on them. That was when I really enjoyed PC Gaming when it was distinct from Console gaming. Now there really isn't much difference between PC and Console other than More can go wrong on a PC. But back then, so many unique PC Only experences. OH and how can I forget the greatness that was Tyrain and Jazz Jackrabbit. Games I only recently discovered.

Oh the glory of the PC master race is still here. It is with the PC that you have access to an infinite amount of content not available, nor possible on console. If you are looking at the mainstream aspect of it, you have mods that completely change and enhance your game in ways no one imagined i.e. the birth of DayZ, or the Just Cause 2 Multiplayer Mode.
This is not even mentioning the fact that the PC is the gateway for strange, absurd and experimental games. They can be whatever the developer wants them to be and release them to the masses quickly and efficiently. The PC brought about the popularity of Kickstarter for better or worse and allowed developers to reach out in new and interesting ways with their fan base. The PC still holds an almost vicious stranglehold on various genres such as the MMO, Real-Time Strategy games and is the epicenter of a huge world known as competitive gaming.
The visuals may not see much difference from console to PC, but what you can achieve with a PC is leagues greater. When you talk of great crappy games... now...that is a literal genre with games like Surgeon Simulator 2013, Octodad and the upcoming Goat Simulator.
Much like you, though, I did have a love for DOS games. I am a huge computer advocator even on a nostalgic basis, with a nice collection of Apple IIGS adventure, action and educational software (STICKY BEAR ALPHABET FTW).
One of my favorite experiences was going through the old shareware demo CDs we would get through magazines. I still have one that has the Elder Scrolls: Arena when you had multiple people in your party. Also there were greats like the Mario Kart knockoff, Skunny Kart and so much more!
My brothers were early pirates back in the mid-80's copying games onto discs from the computer lab in their school. That gave me access to the sierra adventure games and what I consider one of my favorite series ever, Quest for Glory (then Hero's Quest).
I learned DOS at about 6 years old when we switched from the Apple IIGS to PC and never looked back....those were the good ol' days, but the future has just as great of a potential!

This master race bullcrap is exactly why I hate PC gaming so much, well that and the fact Windows Update hates me and I will likely run Linux on my next machine. But the Hubris of PC gamers these days just irritates me to no end.
That said there was no such Nazism in the DOS days. It was all about the games and they were just so Unique. The PC still has great Indie and Doujin games yes, but nothing is keeping those people from porting them over to PS4 where they are going to make money.
PC and Console were too different back in the day. There was no Nazi like MASTER RACE.

I know...I was just being dramatic. I am not saying one is better than the other really, both console and PC have their roles and I enjoy them both!TheRev wrote:This master race bullcrap is exactly why I hate PC gaming so much, well that and the fact Windows Update hates me and I will likely run Linux on my next machine. Yeah not saying you are. But PC gamers tend to be pretty annoying about their chosen platform. My best friend is one of them.
I remember back in the day I'd go in the back of I think Staples or Office Depot, one of the two they'd have basically another store in the back full of DOS games and Software and I would spend hours and hours looking at the different boxes for the Old Dos games It was just a different magical time different from now, parusing Steam just isn't the same as going to the back of an Office Depot where all the goodies were.
Tempted to track down an old PC from 1995 just to play these old classics. I COULD do DOS Box but it just isn't the same.

Yeah there is using DosBox or building a DOS BOX and I understand the need for substantial purchases. There is something more engaging...more intimate about holding the box in your hands and reading the description, maybe even talking to someone in person about the game to determine whether you want to buy it or not.TheRev wrote:Yeah not saying you are. If you can't stand the "master race bullcrap" which is usually PC gamers making a joke, how do you put up with console fanboyism? Ignoring places that are complete cesspools of talk, most 'master race' comments are people playing up PC strengths though consoles have their strenghts as well. I sometimes make the joke but I own more console games than PC ones. One has to tell the difference between joking and trolling and just ignore when one can't tell.

The master race thing was there back in the DOS days, it just wasn't brought up because it was blindingly obvious that PCs were decades ahead of consoles.

Console fanboys tend to just be childish. But PC gamers have been down right nasty to the point of me wanting to find them and punch them in the face. My Best friend is turning into one of those people.Hobie-wan wrote:If you can't stand the "master race bullcrap" which is usually PC gamers making a joke, how do you put up with console fanboyism? Although to be fair Nintendo fanboys annoy the shit out of me.
But it was different then. Back in the day there were genres you could only play on consoles and genres you could only play on a PC or Mac. It was a different time.MrPopo wrote:The master race thing was there back in the DOS days, it just wasn't brought up because it was blindingly obvious that PCs were decades ahead of consoles.
