That's Santa. At least that's what I'm going to tell my kids.

When I was 7 or so I saved up all my allowance/chores money to buy an NES. I finally had enough dough around Christmas.

I gave the money to my mom. She said she would go to the mall and get the NES when she had a chance.

Anyway, she ended up giving me the NES on Christmas day. But the tag said "From Santa." I asked why Santa would need my money to bring me an NES. And why was I paying for my own gift? My mother came up with some elaborate story about how Santa was low on funds that year or something. I was kinda ticked off. But I finally had Mario/Duck Hunt so whatevs.

Learning the truth about Santa provides a valuable lesson in questioning authority. I remember when I first learned that Santa wasn't real and it immediately called into question the Easter Bunny, the tooth fairy, Jesus Christmas, and God. I stopped believing in things just because people told me they were real and committed myself to being a skeptic and learning things for myself. I am thankful that my parents brought me up to believe in Santa.

That is an Alot in its native habitat.

As for lying to kids, I guess I better stop playing "monster" and chasing my nieces around. They are going to be crushed when they learn I'm just a boring human being.
