network modded xbox to my laptop

Post by fredthezombie »

Hi I just modded my xbox with unleash x which amazed me enough that I got it to work :) However, I am trying to load up the hdd on the xbox but don't know how to network my laptop to it I dont have a modem right now and hope to connect the 2 via LAN but have no idea of where to start, any suggestions? Also what are the most useful apps and best emulators for it, is the compatibility for snes good always wanted to play starfox and donkey kong country with an analog stick :)

"C-Xbox tool" is the best way to network your xbox (google it, as I won't link anything). Just make sure that you configure the IP address correctly on the options/preference menu of C-Xbox tool (IP will be the same "192.168.0.(x)" number as the one on your Xbox EvoX screen).

Also, you might want to get a cheap router to hook it up to (if you don't already have one), as I never had any luck with a crossover cable. I bought one for $10 at a thrift store. What was really aggravating is that "port 1" doesn't really work in mine. Took me forever to figure out what the problem was, as I was learning on my own.

Networking anything is frustrating for newcomers, but oh so rewarding.

As for emulators, yes, it has an excellent port of the kick-ass SNES emulator: SNES9x (can't remember the latest release for Xbox).
Don't expect too much from the N64 emulator though.
And, of course, that's just the tip of the iceberg. There are lots of good emulator ports.

Some emulators I got off the xbins ftp site. Others I got from Emucr (although that site is hard to navigate to find the most current releases).

Finally, if you plan on using the stock drive, check what brand it is. If it is a Seagate, then you should enable an "F" drive for an extra 2GB of memory. PM me if you need help here,
or fine, here's a link:

That's what I used, but you have to make sense of where to copy paste info in the evox.ini file.

or this might be better:

Good luck and share your successes :)

P.S. back up your eeprom ASAP. That should be your 1st priority once you get your FTP going right.

That's odd?!?
Sounds like the dashboard file is corrupt or something.

Did you delete or change anything in the Evox.ini file? (if so what was the change) And did you just copy the emulator files into the Emulator folder.

Finally, did you leave your C drive alone? You should have only been transferring to your E drive (unless of course, you had a Seagate drive and enabled the F drive too).

In any case, I might not be of much help here.
...but a couple other ?'s:
-Does the hard drive make any clicking noises? (if so it might be a bad drive)
-Have you tried burning the "Slayer Evox Auto Installer" to a DV-R and booting with that? That might give you a chance to restore the Dash and try again. That might be your best bet to try.
-Do you have your eeprom backed up? If so and all else fails, you could always get a bigger drive and start over.

Glad you got it working.
I've never had a emulator prevent my system from loading, but I guess it happens.

Did you ever figure out if you have a Seagat HDD? Be very careful if you do try to activate the extra 2GB partition (as you don't want to delete anything from the evox.ini file). After a scare like this, you might want to leave well enough alone. Then again, you know how to remedy a lot of situations now too  .
It did work for me though.

I still say back up your eeprom. If your HDD ever goes kaput, that little file is a lifesaver.

i'd like to know how that goes. i've heard 320 is the limit or 500. i can't remember it's been so long when i did mine and tried to research. i just went with a 160 and barely used half that. you'd think you could just get an answer by googling that question but i'd be dammed if i can find it.

One thing that did happen to me was when i moved all my files over to the new hdd and did the unlock/locking program when i put it back in the xbox and fired it back up i had to rerun the softmod. Not sure where i screwed up, it was stock os again. After that it was fine and has been for years.
