Random Thoughts Thread
Re: Random Thoughts Thread
Society must be protected from the realities of how animals and man obtain meat for consumption. How horrible they were exposed to an example of a lion's natural prey be devoured. The zoo staff could of at least breaded and fried the giraffe to make the spectacle more palatable for the observers. Think of the children!oxymoron wrote:There were several zoo's and sanctuary will to take him. They didn't have to kill and slaughter him in front of the public which includes little kids. It seems this could have been a cruel publicity stunt.MrPopo wrote:I suppose they could have taken up one of the people who wanted to take the giraffe off their hands, but assuming they weren't going to do that for reasons, then what's the issue? Bullet in the head is a pretty quick death for the giraffe (certainly better than in the wild) and then feeding the lions? That's just the circle of life.oxymoron wrote:No matter what you think of animals, this is horrible.

I think its interesting Dsh is suggesting parents pay for a wedding in a traditional matter, despite some of the other stuff he's said.
I can't say I'm upset about the giraffe, seeing as I can mostly agree with the director in his decisions. Sure, you could have taken the animal to another zoo, but then again I can't say there's a real reason for it either. If it was an endangered species I could see a stronger argument for it being moved. The director also pointed out that the genetics of the animal were to close to the other giraffes at various Zoo's, and inbreeding is something that should generally be avoided.

fair enough!Jmustang1968 wrote:Neither of our parents could afford a wedding, if I wanted one, I would've had to take out a loan and pay it myself...dsheinem wrote:Why are y'all paying for your own weddings? Traditionally parents are supposed to do that (specifically, traditionally, her parents). I realize that's not what's going to happen in all cases, but the idea is that parents are generally in a better financial position to pay for the wedding than their kids would be...and they should be offering to do so even if their kids are old enough to have their own careers. Again, I realize that traditions aren't everything and that some parents can't/won't help, but I'm shocked by the percentage of folks in here that are talking about their wedding as their own expense.
We had a relatively modest wedding with ~150 people (not cheap, but not extravagant), but both my wife's parents and mine paid 90% or more of the bills. We covered the honeymoon ourselves, mostly with some of the gift money from the wedding.

I don't dislike all tradition, nor do I think they should all be blindly adopted and respected. Parents paying for a wedding is, to me, a nice tradition (like Santa or the Easter Bunny) and not a bad one (like hazing or legacy admissions). But, certainly, there's no shame in bucking it.Forlorn Drifter wrote:I think its interesting Dsh is suggesting parents pay for a wedding in a traditional matter, despite some of the other stuff he's said.

I didn't mean anything by it, I just thought it was interesting. Personally, I would rather my parents not have anything to do with the financial side of my wedding if I were to get married, simply because I've already taken too much money from them and know they couldn't cover it without putting themselves in financial stress. I also feel like I would have to give them some pull in the wedding planning if their money was in it, and I wouldn't necessarily want that. The same as I didn't allow them to pay for either of my cars, because that would have given them control over the vehicles.dsheinem wrote:I don't dislike all tradition, nor do I think they should all be blindly adopted and respected. I am firmly against Santa and the Easter Bunny, and think they do children more harm than good. We're priming them to believe in lies for the sake of something nice.dsheinem wrote:I don't dislike all tradition, nor do I think they should all be blindly adopted and respected.
