I don't know. I seem to recall people complaining a lot about Twilight Princess. My biggest gripe with it wasn't the wolf thing, it's that it was totally forgettable...as in, I'm constantly forgetting that it came out at all. Seriously.
Ultimately though, it sounds like you guys just want a game where it's 2D and Sonic goes really fast. Screw the extras, screw the talking, screw 3D areas, screw all that...you want Sonic 3 on the Genesis updated for the modern day.
I'm sorry, I don't think you'll ever get it. It sure would be cool though.
Sonic Unleashed
Re: Sonic Unleashed
We won't ever get that because Sega aren't basing their games on what cynical crabby old gamers from back in the day want, and I don't blame them. They made so many improvements with this game yet people still want aren't happy and have to moan about everything little thing including stuff that many other games get away with doing all the time. Why is the Werehog combat not fun when it's excatly like God of Wars, which people love? Why is going back to a level to find medals such a big deal when so many other games make you collect all kinds of shit to unlock levels (even Mario galaxy had that obnoxious Luma feeding element which opened up random extra stages which vanished again soon after)? Why are grind rails a problem in Sonic but not Ratchet and Clank?
It's become "cool" to bash pretty much anything Sega does nowadays, they don't get a break. I think the only other company that gets as much grief is Lucasarts, yet Namco, Ubisoft, Midway and even Nintendo are not quite what they used to be either, yet Sega gets more hate than any other. The only old studio I think that has stayed consistent is Capcom, personally. They understand their audience and know what they want, maybe because the capcom fanbase isn't so full of whiny little brats.

Personally, I DON'T want a 2d Sonic. It's been done to death. Sonic belongs in 3d. It's just the way Sega's doing it that's not right.Ack wrote:I don't know. I liked Twilight Princess. It had some epic moments, but it's mostly the same Zelda game people have been playing since Ocarina of Time. Why don't they try some new things like Beyond Good and Evil and Okami did

Well SU turned out to be incompatible with HDL so I'm holding off buying it (it's gotten cheap real fast!) till a patch is made for it.

Re: Sonic Unleashed
Actually, I can think of one reason why Sonic can't get away with that. Because, to all those cynical crabby old gamers, that simply isn't Sonic. Sonic didn't need to turn into another animal with God of War-esque combat, all he had to do was run fast. He didn't need to grind like he was in Tony Hawk, he could simply have rolled into a ball and made it down that way. It's the question of old vs. new...Sega is trying to implement new concepts that worked well in other series, in some cases the very things that interested us in those series.GagaMan wrote:We won't ever get that because Sega aren't basing their games on what cynical crabby old gamers from back in the day want, and I don't blame them. I'd say people see Sega tripping over the line of innovation. Sonic doesn't need all this extra stuff, but he does need something new to keep people interested. So Sega scrambles to figure out what and they do their best by finding what worked well in other places and attempting to implement it, much to the chagrin of the fans who don't want those things.
So where's the fine line? Well, nobody seems to really know.
That's what I think is going on here.
Re: Sonic Unleashed
Yeah, your probably right. I don't think Sega are in a financial postilion where they can take risks anymore, so that's why we see so many Sonic games pumped out with concepts from other games slapped on 9games that proved popular at that). I do still think that the rep Sonic Unleashed is pretty unfair though: you have websites like UK:R and quite a few sonic fan sites downing sonic for some reason all of a sudden. Why now? Why not when the werehog and sonic with a sword were revealed? The interest sure has a way with acting like a drama queen with everyone deciding to tag along with the moaning like sheep.

Re: Sonic Unleashed
I hope none of the overly-whiny stuff is directed at me. If it is, I didn't mean that I don't like anything that isn't the tried and true Sonic formula of yesteryear, it's just that if you have a franchise on the line, then ideas like Sonic the Werehog are way too much of a risk. They should've known that people would ridicule such a goofy concept, which would hurt sales.
Re: Sonic Unleashed
Nah, it was directed at all the website reviews like the IGN one that just can't get over the werehog part and write nothing but how much they hate it rather than wherever or not it plays well, of which many have said the werehog bits plauy far better than any previous non-sonic gameplay in previous 3D sonic gamnes like the emerald hunting etc.

Re: Sonic Unleashed
First of all, seeing as you haven't played it yet, it's good to know that the wii has worse level design. Because just saying it means it's true. From what I've heard that's the reason why it's better. Thye got the people who worked on the portable sonics to help design the levels for the wii version and ended up delivering a pretty well done sonic affair. From what i've seen on the 360 it's a lot of stop and go sonic, with alot of awkward platforming thrown in between the fun. To me it looks like the team on the wii NAILED IT, while the 360 team can't seem to grasp that random walls that are just there to bring you to an abrupt stop aren't fun. As for more werehog less hub.... less hub is good, since when were the fetch quests in any of the new sonic's fun? The werehog is atleast gameplay.GagaMan wrote:Waiting for the PS3 version to show up to see for myself what this is like but out of all the Sonic games in recent years this one is getting some of the most mixed opinions I have yet seen. A lot of people are enjoying, while others are hating it, I suppose a lot like Secret Rings (which personally drove me nuts). The rveiews for the game sound pretty backwards to me, though, as many are rating the Wii version above the 360 one (despite having more werehog stages, worse controls, less interesting level designs and a lazy hub world), and many 360 reviews are saying it's as bad or WORSE than Sonic 2006. IGN's review gave it a 6.5 in graphics. Whaaaat? O_o
I've gotten over the werehog concept myself. Why is it ok for Link to turn into a wolf but not sonic? Oh yeah, that's right, Nintendo can do no wroooong. *rolls eyes*
Second of all, the zelda comparison is stupid. It fits within the zelda world and gameplay style. It was pulled off well, it didn't seem tacked on. The werehog just seems like... hey whats the way were gonna fuck this up now? howbout a werehog? It was like in shadow when they thought, hey, lets make a sonic game about shooting stuff, that's totally why people buy these games.
Don't that just look oh so tasty?

Um, you only have to watch videos to see the Wii stages have far less variety, plus I'm going by opinions I've read by others that have played them both, not reviews. Just about everyone I know who's played it says the Wii version is rather lacking in the level design department. A lot more care and attention went to the 360 version, the fact they got Dimps to do the Wii version doesn't automatically make it better. I'm not sure where you're getting the 'random walls' of the 360 version from, but I guess I'll see for myself when I get it (for PS3). *shrugs*
